At the moment I am split between being an expert in automation equipment and conducting solubility screens for drug projects. With being an expert in the automation equipment, it can involve helping scientists out with any issues they have with the equipment or completing training for those that are new in using the equipment. I also take responsibility for organising the monthly team meetings and ensuring all of my university work is completed to a high standard and on time. I get 1 day a week inside work to complete my university work, however, I am expected to complete some more outside of this dedicated time.
I have improved my organisational skills as when I joined, I wasn't organised when meeting work or university deadlines. Now I am more on track with what needs to be done at what time to ensure that everything is delivered on time. I have also improved my written communication by writing professional emails as well as writing a report in the correct format for university as well as work.
Some of the units seem less exciting to me than others. This means that I need to put more work into these units which can lead to more stress around deadlines as I like to make sure that everything is perfect. In addition, I find the residential week fun, but with a lot of hard work and so I always find it difficult in the run up towards this week.
I feel extremely valued. I am treated like any other member of staff as so I don't feel that I am in any way less than those with full time jobs. I have the same benefits as those on full contracts and so this really helps with my manager when asking for help about the benefits system. I am also used as an invaluable resource on projects when they need help running synthesis, etc.
I feel like the programme structure has improved from the previous years, however, it isn't the most organised as sometimes feedback doesn't come back on time and there aren't very many revision materials for the exams in the summer. The lecturers and my supervisor are always there to help if I need any support though.
Sometimes the lecturers can come across as slightly rude in emails but they always try and help you to the best of their ability even if it means having a phone call to discuss things as sometimes it is easier to do so over the phone. They always try and respond as soon as they can.
My employer gives me a lot of support when needed, including reading through any work that I would like them to and any problems I am having at home. They have been very supportive of my mental health issues and are always there to try and help. They are always happy to see me improving and are always the first to tell me when I'm doing well and what I'm doing well.
Not very well as my rent is half of my wage. I then have to run a car and be able to eat which means I am rarely able to go out and do things with my friends and family that cost. This may be due to the cost of the accommodation (which isn't provided by AZ) rather than the salary. I like how the salary increases each year as you progress which gives you a sense of you adding more to the company. However, I currently have no savings so if anything goes wrong I go into my overdraft or ask my Mum for help
Yes, there are apprentice night outs which are organised over Facebook. Gym membership is subsidised for the on site gym. There is a volunteering day as a team each year at a community outreach project nearby. In addition, there is the annual Christmas Party and Team lunches which are usually every month.
Yes
They are a good company to work for as they really look out for you and help you when you are struggling with the pressure and try and help where they can. In addition, the entire culture of AZ is good as there are lots of events to network with different people and get to know those who may be working in different teams.
I would say try and keep on top of your deadlines and plan for when they will build up to reduce stress. Always ask questions and ask for help if you are struggling and try and be as open as possible with your mentor and line manager as it really helps them understand you and what is the best way to help you.
