I am a Design Engineering Technician Apprentice currently undertaking various tasks. From creating important documentation for the company to hands on work testing different systems and components. I have recently been interacting much more with the company out with my current department, in example I have been sourcing test equipment the department requires to complete a certain job.
I have gained a number of different PEO's within college and am progressing to achieve a HNC in Engineering Systems. In the workplace I have gained valuable skills learning new software ect., have learnt basic knowledge on Radar as a whole and about specific products we make. I have developed skills such as team working, on the tasks I have been given to complete I am required to work with others on a daily basis making sure jobs are complete on time or don't overlap with something else- also improving my time management
The apprenticeship programme is very enjoyable. The programme is well planned, I know what departments I will go into at the start of my apprenticeship so can grasp what sort of work I can expect. I have a balance of hands on experience as well as completing written documentation. So far the apprenticeship programme as met my expectations
Extremely valued. All staff are very friendly and helpful as many of them were once apprentices themselves so know what it is like. I am always included in discussion to do with the current project happening in my area.
The apprenticeship is very organised. The apprentice team always ask apprentices for feedback on what could be improved on in the apprenticeship scheme. When we start we are given a Placement Plan showing what departments we will be working in throughout the apprenticeship, however there have been some minor changes to this plan.
We receive a tremendous amount of support, anyone that I am aware of who has asked for any additional support has got it set up right away. All lecturers want to help and assist you ensuring you are comfortable with a subject before pressing on. I have had no issues with college so far.
We have monthly apprenticeship meetings keeping all apprentices up to date with any information. We have also had a recent session organised to discuss any problems anyone had with the apprenticeship. There are dedicated apprentice management always on site to contact about any concern. We also have a HR team always willing to help. As a whole the apprenticeship scheme is designed for us to succeed
The apprenticeship salary is very generous, I know other apprenticeship schemes for a similar type of work are paid much less. The company also has additional benefits such as working of Flexitime meaning travel costs are less as I can miss peak rush hour traffic. We also gain benefits such as saving money on a number of retailers, experiences and holidays.
During our apprenticeship we are signed up to be STEM ambassadors so we can educate and inspire younger generations out width the company. Leonardo also has events running regularly onsite and offsite the apprentices volunteer to help out. We gain free membership to Edinburgh Leisure so can take advantage of their facilities after work.
Yes
It is a very good apprenticeship with loads of opportunities. You get to work with cutting edge technology.
Practice your presentation as you are given a set time to present it, you do not want to fall short or go way over the expected time given. It is important to stand out in a good way; show interest, ask questions and leave an overall good impression.
