  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Work Experience Placement - I was given a induction to familiarise myself, then over the week I worked a three departments within Pinsent Masons. The tasks I was given were both achievable and an accurate representation the work of trainee solicitors. I was also given opportunities to do external tasks which were outstanding - this was a great chance to be independent. The culture within the firm was always welcoming, comfortable and friendly - I’m a little sad that I had to leave.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned day-to-day office skills which are fundamental to working in such an environment, even things like learning to print, scan and photocopy - while it may sound silly - were very useful and I’m sure these skills will be used in the future. My analytical skills were also improved through the various legal work I completed. I think the awareness of good admin cannot be understated in such a high level profession and as so many documents are dealt with I think this is something I will take forward to develop even further. The knowledge of what to look for in creating a good CV was also a great help and definitely one of the most constructive aspects of the week.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work was both relevant and engaging; I found the variety of departments good so as to sample the different workloads taken on in each sector. Each team was very inclusive and never shy to help me or ask for a favour - they made it feel as though I was an actual employee. Everyone was very happy to chat amongst the working and people were always willing to lend me a mug if I wanted a tea or hot chocolate. The whole experience was relaxed but hard-working at the same time which was definitely a atmosphere which I though was great.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Pinsent Masons?
  • In most of my teams, I found the relationships to be very positive. They would always answer questions and be fully understanding if I’d made an oversight, missed or got something wrong. It was very beneficial when I was given real work rather than pre-made tasks. On the occasions when I was given training packs, I felt as though these were less relevant and the task I was actually given could be completed as the work was so out of date. There were several points where I felt like I was inconveniencing my supervisor - as he seemed very busy - and I did not want to trouble him at points when I had finished work. This made it difficult to know when I should ask for another thing to work on as he seems to need to be working rather than explaining how to do things to me.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme we were given gave a clear notice of where we should be at every time and what we would be doing at these times. We were given a good introduction to the company including its ethos and expectations of us - meaning the culture and what was expected of us was always clear. Each department gave a a good insight into their work, however brief my time there was.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Most supervisors were very helpful and always had a clear idea of what they wanted me to do. Everyone around the office was able to help me with any tasks or random jobs I was struggling with. At some points, I did not need any support and my supervisors were confident enough to let me work individually, which was good,

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I was given clear instructions from HR as to where to find everything I would need. I was given access to a work email and print code which was very beneficial as I got a real feel for the office environment and I was able to do tasks independently. My supervisors gave me all needed support - answering all questions and giving me any information that I asked for.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As work experience, I was not paid however Inwas given a supermarket voucher to allow me to buy lunch every day which was very nice of Pinsent Masons. I was told that travel expenses would also be paid however I have not been contacted in respect to this. Due to the experience I gained from the week, I was very happy with what was provided.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • As I was on a short (week-long) placement, it did not seem appropriate to join any social activities or clubs associated with the firm. Despite this, I was made aware of a football and netball team made up by the staff. If I had been on a longer placement I would have definitely considered joining some of the very social aspects of the firm.
