  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job role is Logistics Apprentice. The day to day role is typically the same as the picker role at the Aldi warehouse. This includes picking and preparing orders ready to be sent to stores i.e. stacking of goods onto pallets, wrapping and leaving in lanes ready to be delivered. I am also involved in some quality control of checking pallets for errors and incorrect placement in lanes.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to stack and some quality control and goods in (checking in products as they are delivered). I am due to be put on internal courses such as bulk trucks and reach trucks. I would enjoy more opportunities to learn and grow skills as well as maximising time spent learning new skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme thus far has been tough at times. I enjoy the people i work with and how the work keeps me fit, however i feel like there should be more room for learning and more opportunities for setting you up for your intentional work role at the end of the course.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Aldi?
  • I have found it varies. In some departments i have felt as if they are pushing to make me the best employee they can and providing all the experiences they can for me where other times i have felt like an afterthought or put to the side when times are busier and just left to the day to day jobs.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The outside structure of my programme (outside assessor) is fantastic with communication clear and work done with lots of feedback. Inside structure is quite free flowing and depends on what your internal mentor thinks would be best for you. This can lead for large periods of picking while waiting for your next opportunity.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Huge amounts of support! My assessor is always just an email or call away and our meetings are always useful and provide plenty of feedback on the written work.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am provided support when i need it, i know that if i have any issues i can talk to my manager about anything pertinent.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As with all apprenticeships pay is low, however in comparison to others and minimum apprenticeship wage Aldi pays considerably more. Still this is much lower than minimum wage. You would not be able to live without support on this wage package as of year 1.

    8/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Opportunities are advertised around but other than seeing posters i have not seen much happening. This could be personal to me however.

  • 9. Would you recommend Aldi to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • In their normal jobs roles they pay well and take care of their employees. They are in a massive spurt of growth in the UK and it would be a fantastic opportunity to start working for them.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Aldi?
  • Be aware of the amount of physical work that you will have to undertake if you are working as a picker/warehouse apprentice. You will get used to it but at the start it can be a shock.
