  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Indirect Tax Advisor. I work in both advisory and compliance, helping clients with correspondence to HMRC, assessments from HMRC, ensuring that they are compliant with necessary requirements and helping to improve their operating models. I also help with VAT returns and the new government initiative of Making Tax Digital which focuses on the use of robotics to minimise the need for manual intervention. These projects also involve client meetings, in which I can grow and develop a network within the financial services world.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • In terms of professional qualifications I am studying for ICAEW ACA exams, in hopes to qualify and become a chartered accountant. I also have internal technical training which enhances my technical knowledge of indirect tax and subsequently improves the work that I complete in the office. I have learnt many soft skills such as e-mail and letter writing, how to network in a beneficial and professional manner and I've also learnt to be more efficient with my time and to effectively manage expectations.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy this programme and think that I definitely made the right choice by pursuing a career with EY. The culture of the team and the company overall is a nice one to work within, everyone is happy to help and is willing to aid you in your developments. I'm very content with the work load that I have and feel that it gives me a broad range of experience but not too much pressure, allowing me to study for exams alongside this.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EY?
  • Regular feedback and informal comments show that my work is appreciated and that I have been welcomed into the team. There are 'healthEY' bulletins that give mental health advice to ensure that people feel relaxed and I think that these really help to remind me to not get too stressed if ever I do. There are also many diversity and inclusivity bulletins and events that ensure everyone in the company feels valued. I feel as though my work and contributions are valued in projects that I'm involved in.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. When I began there was a 2 day induction to ensure that everyone knew what to do when joining the office. There is plenty of training and support within the team (and even other members of the company from other teams). On a 90 day basis we have a one-to-one meeting with a counsellor from the team to talk over how things are going so far, to set goals for the future and plan on how to meet those goals. There is also a designated professional qualifications team who are readily available to answer any questions that one may have regarding the qualifications.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive heaping of support, every member of the team is readily available to help out (despite the amount of work that they have to complete for clients). There are also many others in the company that are available, e.g. the professional qualifications team, the apprenticeship coordinator. People in the team would even stay behind in the evening to lend a hand with any difficulties that one may face when revising.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer also provides a lot of support, tere is a general HR inbox that one can email with any issues and a reponse tends to be received within the same day. Alternatively there are HR helplines to talk directly to someone regarding any issues. My manager hold weekly team meetings to provide support or is available to book a one-to-one whenever necessary.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary package meets my cost and then an awful lot beyond my costs also. Travel is my largest outgoing each month and even that is just a small fraction of the salary. Consireding that I have joined EY straight from A-levels I am very content and pleased with the salary that I earn.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many networks at EY, for all kinds of sport imaginable and then some. There are often events within the building or external events advertised. As I am on the school leaver programme and believe that it is a great opportunity besides university I often represent EY at external studet recruitment events. We also organise CSR days to help with charities, in addition to this there are often charitable bake sales in the canteen.

  • 9. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • EY holds an excellent programme and is an excellent emlpoyer overall, I would highly recommend working for EY to anyone who is interested in financial services.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • To not be nervous (within reason) as everyone just wants to see the true you and that's only possible if you're relaxed. Also that preparation is key, as it also is on the job, and this is the main way to ensure that you do your best.
