  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in the test environment for VoIP products (Voice over IP). I work on the SIP Trunking platform and am a SIP Trunking Test Engineer. On a daily basis, I test our model network with upgrades and changes to ensure that the live network is as efficient as it can be. I work on a number of projects to ensure that the live network stays as resilient as possible.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a number of key skills since starting the apprenticeship programme. I did not have a clue what the platform was when I first joined, 2 1/2 years on and I am a test engineer on the platform. I have also been studying for a degree which has been challenging but rewarding as it allows me to have a more in depth understanding of my job role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme as it enables me to develop a key number of skills as well as learning new ones. The team I work in is a very close nit group which allows us to work together to get work completed. I have enjoyed my apprenticeship programme as it has mixed work with university at the same time. I have been studying for a degree which has exceeded my expectations.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is very competitive for an apprenticeship. The pay rises each year along with the assimilation pay is very good. This allows for a very comfortable living for young adults, especially teenagers where most people that age are coming out of university.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many benefits to working at BT. For instance, we are allocated 3 volunteering days each year to help local charities. There are also a number of discounts provided by BT. There are also a lot of opportunities where I work at Adastral park with things like snooker tables, tennis courts and a gym on site to allow employees to take part in a number of leisure activities.
