I am an FVR engineer, this entails the maintenance of BT network. Daily tasks would include renewing cable lengths, remaking joints and replacing old equipment with new equipment to improve the standard of our network. I usually work within a team of between 2 and 4 people some times I can be on my own. As we are maintenance we generally don't speak to customers but on the odd occasion we do interact with some. My responsibilities are to improve the network and to make sure that I am working in a safe environment for myself and others.
I am currently on (almost finished) an NVQ in telecommunications level 2. I have learnt how the telephone network works and how to find faults without our network. We have been on course internally and externally for all sorts of qualifications including, Road works guiding, operation of a hoist just to name a couple.
The work is very rewarding as we get to see the improvement we have made first hand. We work as a team and help each other out when we need an assist or if we would just like a second opinion. The company is great to work for and they really care about your wellbeing as well as your safety. It was better than expected and I am currently over the moon with how well it is going.
I feel very valued, I get feedback from different managers who tell me I am doing really well. They also give me a plan on how I can next improve. I have had the opportunity to get involved in a lot of different task which usually wouldn't happen within the first year. This has opened my eyes to the possibilities within openreach and BT.
The training was for the most part very good. I was a newly ran program and this is of course going to bring its own challenges. Any concerns we had BT dealt with them as best and as quick as possible. We gave our feedback on the areas we felt needed to improve and they set about doing this for the next intake. I have had support at every step of the way, there is always someone on the end of the phone or someone willing to come and help you out if needed.
My tutor helped me out with my NVQ when ever I was struggling, he was always a phone call or email away and if I couldn't get in touch there was always someone willing to help me out. Every single person within my team has been there to help me with any questions I have, they all have a great knowledge and over 500 years of experience combined.
My manager speaks to us once a week to make sure everything is okay. HR are either a phone call or email away, lucky I haven't needed them but others that have contacted them have spoken highly. This is one of the best companies I have worked for.
Salary was a good start, I did take a pay cut but for only one year when it was going to rise. I have been able to live with no issues and with the use of a Van and paid petrol this has helped me save the money I use to spend on getting to and from work. Location is perfect, I get to travel all over south Manchester rather than being stuck in one place all day.
There is always something going on or being organised. I am pretty busy in my spare time with my own activities so don't get involved much but from the emails there is always something going on. They offered you 3 days a year which you can choose to volunteer at anywhere charity you like and be paid your normal wage which is a great feeling.
Yes
Great company to work for who have you at the front of everything they do. Read my answers above on how impressed I am with the company. You can earn a great living just depending how much you put into your work.
Jump in, don't be scared and ask as many questions as possible.
