I am an Openreach Fibre engineer and I build the infrastructure of the fibre network to new build housing sites. I regularly have to manage my own day with the tasks that are given to me.
I am on my way to completing my Level 2 diploma in telecommunications and IT competence. Also I have learned many new skills vital to my job, such as how to splice fibres together and how the network works.
I enjoy all aspects of my learning so far, the field based buddy learning has been vital to give me the skills to do what I need to do and the class based learning has been valuable in giving me the correct credentials to do what I do.
Very as I feel I have progressed quickly and have many more responsibilities than when I started.
The NVQ program has a good pace set as I feel I can be a field engineer in my day to day work and then am given plenty of time in guided learning to do the NVQ work.
I have had a lot of support from everyone from the time I started and even now the support continues, everyone is willing to help.
As much as I request, my manager, senior engineer, and other experienced engineers are always there when I need them.
My current salary is slightly more than that of my last job so for me it is adequate.
Yes I have joined the ITP and have regular chances for external events.
Yes
Good working atmosphere, good place for a hands on career, and great career prospects.
Be yourself and don't worry as the interviews and assessment days are not as bad as they sound.
