I am a track apprentice, working in the technical office. Carrying out surveying, platform gauging, machine work and further technical jobs within the railway. The job involves office and practical work.
The apprenticeship has allowed me to gain a variety of skills. Training courses within 2-3 year, allow you to gain competencies to put to use when you get back to the depot. Training in the first has no relevancies to the railway.
Enjoyed the programme. Make friends for life in the first year, gain a variety of skills and knowledge, giving you a good platform to progress a career
Everyone within the depot makes you feel valued, they involve you in all tasks which are going on and try to help you gain new skills throughout.
The apprenticeship is well organised, however there is communication issues throughout, which are not communicated across well.
The instructors provide good support when training at Sultan, they provide you with the correct information to pass the course. Whenever stuck they always try to help.
Manager and staff provide good support. As there is previous apprentices now within the technical team, they are able to help throughout.
First year salary in Sultan was ok, salary increases throughout the years within the apprenticeship.
There is always activities to take part in outside work, which get depots together
Yes
Allows you to gain knowledge and experience while earning a living. The skills and knowledge you gain are very good and provides you within a stepping stone to progress further within the company.
Make sure you gain knowledge on the different disciplines within the company, before going for the interview. Apprenticeship accommodation in first year has changed from sultan to Westwood, so wouldn't be able to comment on the facilities there.
