I am a trainee engineer for Openreach - a subdivision / legally separate part of BT who maintain the telephone lines throughout the UK. I'm at the end of my one year apprenticeship after completing a NVQ level two in Telecoms and IT. On a day to day basis, I start my day by picking up work on my work issued phone and then head out in my own company van. A typical day will consist of fixing faults on telephone lines and providing new lines to residential premises and commercial as well. I'm given all the tools I need and the support network is incredible, every engineer I've met has been friendly and very happy to either help me on a job or give advice over the phone. At the moment I work solely on the overhead network but I'm looking to progress into the underground network when I transition to a regional team sometime in June. Overall, I am incredibly happy with the apprenticeship and job and look forward to a good career with the company.
I've learnt how provide phone lines, understand a vast amount of faults that can affect a phone line / broadband service and how to fix them including understanding a Hand Held Tester and seeing how the network works together to provide service.
I've enjoyed the programme immensely and look forward to coming into work everyday.
I've received numerous e-Cards from colleagues for helping them solve problems and really good one to one bi-yearly reviews with my manager. I've not faced any disrespect from my manager or any other colleagues and everyone seems to want you to succeed at the role.
Good. We are given numerous days throughout the year where we meet with a local NVQ coach who assists us with any questions and queries we may have as we complete our NVQ course.
There is always somebody on the other end of the phone willing to answer any questions you have as well as any engineers you come across out in the field. You also get a Coach who makes day visits out to you and runs workshop days to help better further your skills
A fair amount - They are always accommodating for a work/life balance and always try to fulfil any requests you may have
Well. It can be tough if you live alone or have numerous bills but the starting salary and pay increases once you finish your apprenticeship are well above board for a job that requires no previous experience or higher education qualifications.
Yes - Many volunteering opportunities and scheduled visits to important BT locations like the BT Tower
Yes
