  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role within the KYC team involves the analysis and gathering of information of clients of the bank in order to build a suitable and substantial AML record on the client. We have our own work load and number of records we are responsible for. We are therefore responsible for the collection of information from the front office, completion of the record and submission to QC and the checking and correction of it after that. We also need to ensure that we prioritise and time our records correctly to ensure that they do not run over the actual completion dates set for each client.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to communicate successfully and confidently over email, conference calls and the phone in order to obtain the relevant and correct information for the records. This is a skill as sometimes we need to explain the requirement and give guidance of how to obtain it. Also client owners can be based all around the globe so I have been able to speak to different client owners within different countries. I have also developed work load management and prioritisation skills within this role which is vital in allowing the records to be completed on time and not becoming overdue.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme, especially my role within the firm. I am very lucky the team I am in have provided me with my work load and we are treated as part of the team and not as an apprentice which will benefit me in the future as I have learnt things quicker and in real time. In terms of the coursework and exams, I think the structure of the apprentice is good, our coursework modules do not seem to get in the way of our revision for the exams which is good as it takes a lot of revision for these exams. The study day at home is also very beneficial as I really appreciate not having to go into college as I get a lot more work done and am more efficient working alone at home.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • We have many contacts and support options from the training provider so they will always be there if needed. I have not had to obtain any support from them personally but we have one face to face session before every exam which can be useful and peoples queries are answered very quickly and efficiently.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?

  • 9. Would you recommend J.P. Morgan to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because JP Morgan is a good, competitive place to work that will look to push you to your best. There is a good amount of pressure at work and we are always busy which is what I wanted from a job and the fact that I can get this from an apprenticeship also, is very valuable.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to J.P. Morgan?
  • I would say to others applying that if you know where abouts in the bank you want to work, say that. They are good with putting you in places where you want to work. If they don't know, then be very open to trying different roles. In terms of the exams and coursework, I would advise to speak to their managers beforehand about their study load so that this is understood and also start revision and work early so that there is no stress of cramming it in last minute as we are so busy with our role, the last thing that they will need is to be distracted from their role by worrying about the work for the exams - so be prepared.
