I am a dessert and starter chef. My role's involve, opening and closing a kitchen, setting up dessert and starter section, prepping food, cooking food, serving food to a high standard. I am also responsible for filling out required documents to ensure safe working practice and to comply with company standards
I have learnt many new skills as before my apprentiship I had not had any qualifications or full time experience in working in a full time busy restaurant kitchen. I have developed my basic understanding of food safety to a much clearer and law abiding knowledge ready for any EHO visits the kitchen recieve
I love being able to learn new topics within the food industry. I also love he support and advice from both my tutor and the websites he has provided me. I also enjoy being able to work and share my knowledge with colleagues and have their input into my learning.
I feel very valued by Mitchells and Butlers because not only have they provided me with the opportunity to gain a qualification with them, they are supporting me every step of the way. Between colleagues and senior management they have all assisted in my learning and have been keen to keep up to date with my progress.
The programme is very organised in the sense of the work booklets are provided in a logical order. Everything links to everything but progresses just a bit more from the last topic allowing your knowledge to be built slowly and adequately. This structure helps make the learning process a much simpler one
I recieve a lot of support from my training provider. I recieve lots of check up texts and phone calls and he is always to hand when I am in need of help. Nothing is too awkward for him and he revolves around my awkward working patterns
I recieve a lot of support from my employer. From progress checks to helping me answer booklet questions and general questions. My manager has also been very supportive in accommodating work place visits from my trainer to ensure that I get the best I can in my apprentiship training
My salary package is only minimum wage and therefore I find it difficult some months to keep afloat with daily and monthly costs
At the moment there are not many opportunities outside of work but I am hoping once I complete my training I will be able to go further within the food industry and progress to a higher level one day
Yes
The company provides many benefits for its employees and is very flexible. They are very accommodating for last minute changes and always try their best to find an equal ground with you to ensure you perform at your best with them
Be true to what you want and always strive to be your best. Positivity and an upbeat personality are key especially for the busier periods
