my role as an apprentice once qualified is to be a craftsman which on a day to day basis involves me maintaining a variety of equipment on the sub station. so it is a monday to friday normally and you can be working on an indoor sub station or an outdoor station
i have learnt many skills at the training centre as you spend alot of time there in the first two years. you learnt vital hand skills and machine skills that you would use when out on site. they all start you off at the same point so everyone is involved and they do take into consideration your past working knowledge. you also get a strong knowledge of the theory side of the work and well as the practical.
i have enjoyed the programme so far as it was a good learning curve, meeting new people as well as learning new skills. and as i am on site more i feel like i am getting on with the team but you are getting asked to work extra hours for your learning but the company wont finicially support you therefore you are working for nothing. also you are asked to complete a considerable amount of paperwork which they dont really guide you on so when it is sent in for marking it just gets sent straight back with not much feedback
i do feel like a valued member of the team as apprentices are the future oif the work force so they take time to train you and develop you in to a craftsman. also on site other members of the work force are happy to help and spend time with you so that yoiu can understand how to carry out the job as they can see that they will be working with you in the future and need to know that you are competent
it is very well organised the programme and it plans all the theory side of the job in the first year and a half and then the rest of your apprenticeship you can be on site applying your practical skills and developing them. sometimes there are courses that get changed or cancelled but you are informed early on so that you know. but when collecting evidence as part of our logbook we were doing that but it got changed and there was no correlation between the old and new logbook and they still expected us to complete a big proportion of this when we havent had enough time on side. i feel that there is a lack of support towards you and not alot of guidance
i feel like they do support me and others throughout the apprenticeship. when you want to find out information they are quick to respond and will always inform you more if need be. all the training is done via the academy whichg is set up well and runs smoothly most of the time.

i believe it is an excellent salary compared to other companies and their apprenticeship schemes but the only down side is that if they ask you to work extra as part of your learning they are not willing to pay you or will only pay half as they class it as training so you should give your own time up for the company which i believe is wrong. they are wanting to training an apprentice so they should pay for all their training which may happen on site.
once i have completed the apprenticeship scheme i believethat there are oppotunities to move on through the company but they dont happen often or they take a considerable amount of time to get passed. there are always opportunities on site to see job and work with different people so i believe it is fair and that opportunities do arise for you
No
i believe it is an excellent company to work for and there are equal opportunities arise but the way the company is going and trying to save costs i believe that the work force is going to get squeezed anbd reduce in size until there is only a few as i can see that they will put the work out to tender as it may be cheaper than paying for a work force
i would say that if they want to work in the energy sector then i would recommend looking else where like the DNOs or renewable energy as the stability of national grid isnt very good and they are trying to cut cost at the bottom of the work force so i would make sure that you thin k hard before applying to the grid
