  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Agricultural Relationship Manager based out of the Brecon branch, but I also work out of Abergavenny. There isn't really a day to day layout, however typically the normal day to day running’s include checking emails, my work phone and calendar first thing in the morning. I tend to go out on two or more appointments with colleagues during the week and assist with the paperwork before and after the meetings

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have built upon existing skills to be able to do my role, the most vital one I believe is communication skills. Being able to understand the customers’ business and their needs and being able to engage in meaningful conversations to help them as best I can. However, I have also learned a new skill that is dynamic working.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my role, although it is a challenge to manage my time with completing the degree side of the program as well as the apprenticeship which was not made clear before starting what it would include and the best part is the job itself. The job is also quite rewarding.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Barclays?
  • Barclays makes me feel valued by giving me lots of opportunities, and most importantly my fellow colleagues made me feel welcomed from day one and are always there to support me, I know I could pick up the phone to any one of them and they would be able to assist me as best I can.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Me and my fellow apprentices on the Agricultural scheme are the first batch to be taken on, so we are very much guinea pigs in the testing and evolution of the scheme. There is somewhat a structure for us over the next three years until we finish but there is scope for us to develop at our own rates but there is a set end goal for us now.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The university side of training is good and well delivered but the apprenticeship side is not very clear and leaves a lot of uncertainty. The tutors from knowledge pool contradict each other and there is limited guidance on moving forward through the apprenticeship. On the flipside, the degree makes up for this by being well organised and implemented.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Barclays have provided plenty of support and are always willing to help where they can, my line manager is very good at supporting me in all three aspects of the apprenticeship scheme and is good at identifying areas I need to work in and how best to move forward and succeed.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • For apprentices we are paid well however until we have a pay increase it is hard to save and be able to build up money.

    7/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Barclays are always advertising internally to colleague’s opportunities to get involved in charitable events such as fundraising and pound for pound contributions for staff to support local causes. Also there is options for staff to attend events such as the Royal Welsh Show so that Barclays can be seen to support the event.
