I am a Programme Engineer within the supplier development function of the purchasing department. I am responsible for supporting suppliers, buyers and engineers in delivering projects which ensure the supply of quality parts into our manufacturing plants. I work with people at all levels of JLR and supplier organisations, from Managing Directors to shop floor machine operators, in both JLR and Supplier facilities. I am responsible for managing and reporting data relating to the programme, and ensuring that suppliers meet deadlines. My work is mostly office based, but I also spend time travelling and working in engineering and manufacturing environments.
As an apprentice I have gained NVQ qualifications, as well as an ONC and Foundation Degree in Engineering. I am now working towards a BSc in engineering, fully sponsored by JLR. I have completed internal training courses specifically related to my job role and the processes and tools used within my area, as well as training in business behaviours and communication skills. I have gained experience in project management, as well as practical hands on skills in electrical and mechanical engineering. The wide range of knowledge and experience which I have gained is a huge benefit in my current role, as I have a good understanding of how a number of departments in JLR work together.
I have immensely enjoyed the JLR apprenticeship programme, and regard it as a strong foundation on which to build my career. The Culture within JLR is very positive and supports professional development, and is an exciting place to be during a time of rapid expansion and growth.
I regularly meet with my line manager to discuss my work as well as my development and any support which I need, and this is often used to give positive feedback on the work which I have been doing.
The JLR apprenticeship programme is very well organised, and provides the support and structure which has allowed me to get the most out of my time as an apprentice.
My manager and colleagues have always been very supportive, providing all of the help which I have needed in order to complete my apprenticeship
Yes
I have on several occasions recommended the JLR apprenticeship, as it has been an excellent starting point for my career, and I feel that this is the best way to gain the experience and qualifications needed to become a valuable employee in the manufacturing sector.
Look for ways to stand out from the crowd and sell yourself in the application process, as there is always a huge amount of competition.
