my job within the BMW group is a maintanence apprentice at the mini plant. the tasks that we take part in involve preventative maintanece tasks which involve checking and refurbishing equipment and reactive maintenance tasks which involve fixing faults on equipment that is being used on the line.
during my time as an apprentice i have learnt many new skills, these skills include being able to carry out basic electrical, electronic and PLC jobs, handfitting and machining tasks and mechanical and fluid power tasks
I enjoy the day to day work as it is very varied in what we get to do every day as there are many different maintanence tasks that need to be conducted in our placement areas. i enjoy that we get to work in the three main technoligys within the plant as each area requires you to learn different skills
as an apprentice at the mini plant i feel that our work is appreciated by all levels of workers at the plant as we can be asked to do jobs for any level of managment at the plant.
the apprenticeship is well organised, our first year of our 4 year course is spent one day a week doing college work and then the rest of the week learning basic engineering skills, in the 2nd and 3rd year we spend one day a week at college and the rest of the week on placements with the different maintanence teams in the different technologies. in the 4th year we spend the wholke year in our final placement learning the area and starting shift work.
we recieve a lot of support from our training provider, if we need any extra support with college work they will put on extra sessions, the training provider also keeps on top of our college work always making sure that we are achiving our best.
we recicve a lot of support from our employer, our employer will support us however we require, we have regular meetings with our managers where they ask if there is anythig we need.
the salary mmets my living costs and allows me to build up a savings account as well. as well as the sallary the job within the bmw group provides us with other benifits such as a car scheme.
there are many oppurtunities to get involved with activities outside of work, these activities involve trips to outdoor activity centres, charity events and sports events.
Yes
i would recomend an apprentiship to a freind as it provides you with the same level as education that a college or sixth form would aswell as providing actual work experiances as well as a wage.
when applying for an apprentcship i would advise spending some time on your application and when attending an interview make sure that you give the best representation of yourself and provide examples of similar work you have done previously at work or college.
