substation apprentice my daily tasks involve maintaining the substations system due to faults or planned outages. when outages are not due we may be asked to go to other sites outside our area to help with different outages or prepare for the next one due.
I have current gained two new qualifications during my time at national grid a NVQ and a city and guild. I have also learned a lot about working as a team with others as you meet new people a lot during this apprenticeship due to the amount of travel required.
I really enjoy my job and what it entails, its a different experience every time you work on a piece of equipment, however sometimes it is hard to meet deadlines due to timescale and what different people expect of you.
I feel very valued due to the amount of training they are willing to pay for and provide for me, also being given the chance to have some responsibility on site from my manager showing trust in me to carry out tasks.
every year we get a plan in advance of all the training and when we will receive it that year, however sometimes this is a downfall due to the requirement to find jobs and these being able to change at the last minute because of the system operator. this may sometimes cause and outage to be cancelled last minute or moved months away and this can cause problems with our training, however this can normally be rescheduled.
every 10 weeks we have a review on how we are getting on this allows us to discuss any problems we have and they can set up a plan to help us and anyone is happy to help as long as you ask.
same again as the last question anyone is always willing to help with any problems you have if you ask them everyone I work with are easy to approach and willing to assist you in anyway they can.
national grid offers a great wages to apprentices compared to others. all travel costs are covered by them and anytime you stay away the hotels and food is paid for and does not come out of your pocket
national grid offer many events to us, this can sometimes be prompting the company giving you the opportunity to speak to potential apprentices of the future giving advice, and knowledge of what the job entails.
Yes
because its a great opportunity to gain qualifications and experience and its never the same jobs day in and out
do your research before I started national grid I didn't know a lot about them find out about what we do, who our competitors are. feel comfortable on the assessment day if you are there they want you just as much as you want it
