my job role is a craftsperson's apprentice. Every day there are different tasks to complete and I like this because everyday is a different day and you never find the days becoming monotonous. sometimes we find ourselves work to do around site as there is a lot of equipment to maintain and lots of things to sort out.
I have developed a lot of new skills in my apprenticeship. When I finished my apprenticeship I will have a qualification that is well recognized. I have been on numerous training courses externally and internally that allow me to complete my day to day activities.
There are times where I have enjoyed my apprenticeship and times where I haven't enjoyed my apprenticeship. I enjoy working on the jobs and getting stuck into big maintenance jobs such as, refurbishment of circuit breakers, earth switches and isolators on site. There were times where I wasn't enjoying myself at the Eakring training center because of being away from a lot and a lot of the work was in a classroom and I think this is because I am a kinesthetic learner.
I feel quite valued by national grid because my manager trusts me to complete tasks and the company has invested a lot of money in me to train me to become a craftsperson
I get a annual plan detailing when and where training courses are this is good and bad because we get time to plan our on site jobs as and when we are on site but this sometimes clashes and training courses have to be rearranged.
We have reviews every 10 weeks and we are asked if we require further support. We are able to get in touch with trainers and they are more than happy to answer questions when need guidance.
i receive a good level of support
The salary is good and the company pay for work clothes, tools and a van with fuel costs covered.
there are many events promoted to us that promote the company to the outside world
Yes
In general working for National grid is a good opportunity for a person to grow and develop. the apprenticeship is a good way for younger people to mature as the apprenticeship is a stepping stone into joining the adult world.
Don't be daunted by the work load or the expectations. National grid and other employees will help and support you to help you develop as long as you show willing and hard work.
