As a track apprentice I work with the permanent way teams to maintain the infrastructure, this includes taking measurements as well as the use of tools and equipment.
I have gain various competencies whilst carry out this role, I have attended training courses which I have then used the knowledge from on the track to carry out maintenance.
I have enjoyed the program to an extent, I have easily felt as part of the team and an asset to the company, the overall work is not what I expected though and I have no wholly enjoyed it.
I feel like an important part of the company, this is because I am the next generation of workers and so without the support of apprentices there would be a lack of workforce for the future.
The program is structured well overall, the training courses are followed with practical exercises and workbooks that must be completed relating to the course. The NVQ work could be given sooner so that it matches with the tasks required.
Much support is given, this is during the training courses where questions are encouraged so that an understanding of a subject can be made, they are also contactable by phone and email.
I have had lots of support during my apprenticeship, having gained an injury my employer has made arrangements for me to carry out a lighter work load, as well as time for my treatment to be carried out.
The salary is a bit light, on occasions I can find myself short on funds as the majority of wages go on my living and travel costs.
