Deputy store manager (store apprentice) Review

What it is like to work for aldi on a day to day basis as one of their apprentices is a very fast paced self learning environment with exceptional high standards. From my first day I was given my basic training and then thrown into the deep end. This was good for me as it forced me to adapt and try to understand the Aldi way of work. As an apprentice I have some responsibilities more so now that I am now a managing apprentice to this means I have to be a leader on the shop floor and tills, so an example of this on the tills is holding onto the x key which authorises all managerial decisions on the tills. Another example of being a leader is being available to help out customers and fellow coworkers on the shop floor this can be anything from sorting out complaints to getting the job done myself.

I have developed a good work ethic since being at Aldi I try to come to every shift given to me and more often I take an extra shift if asked to do one. Another skill I have learnt is to deal and manage people as before Aldi I have had no experience in doing this. Everything else is pretty much learn on the job I didn’t receive a lot of individual training in different areas of the job it was just the expectations of each area and the rest I had to figure out by learning from my coworkers.

I do enjoy this apprenticeship as I have met some amazing people and some great friends and learnt a lot about working in the work place. On most days it is quite enjoyable but there are a lot of days where it can be rather unbearable when dealing with customers and management.

I feel that as an member of the team especially to the store assistants I am valued and appreciated a lot as I try and go the extra mile for them and to some of the managers I think I have showed enough to be seen as a valued member of the team.

Honestly my programme isn’t that well organised as my first apprenticeship provider went into liquidation and the second one had no clue where I was at in my apprenticeship or what I was even doing. But the work side is pretty standard you have your shifts and you work them.

I usually have a talk to and we talk about the basics of the workplace and it’s usually all the things I know already but I just go through them again with my apprentice assessor.

I don’t receive that much training as I am expected to know everything but from time to time I am shown how to access something or how to deal with something briefly.

My pay changes quite a lot I orgially was getting £5.40 this increased to £5.55 and it gradually kept going up to my current wage which is now £7.50 which compared to my original pay is a massive improvement but compared to my coworkers it is quite minuscule given the fact I do the same things as them plus more.

There aren’t a lot of opportunities outside of work as the unemployment percentage is over saturated right now and there aren’t a lot of jobs out there.

It is really hard to work for Aldi and the expectations are high and unrealistic and at times you do feel undervalued and unappreciated but there are also good days and the prospects after the apprenticeship are great.
