  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • R&D Tax Services. Assisting clients from FTSE100 to SME in producing claims for Research and Development Expenditure Credits. Processing project tracked data and using this to calculate relevant project costs which qualify for the RDEC scheme in the UK. Often discussing the data with clients, visiting clients to discuss their R&D projects and producing the claim figures and supporting documentation to be submitted with the claim to HMRC.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned a lot via studying for ACA exams and now have a solid understanding of tax and accounting. Further to this, as I am based in tax I also go on regular tax technical training which goes into greater detail on various corporate tax aspects. I have greatly developed soft skills, such as communication and teaming. I have learned how to use new software, such as workflow processing tools like Alteryx and dashboarding software such as Power BI, as part of my role in EY's digital agenda to develop a more streamlined digital approach to general excel based functions.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme has been great for both my personal and professional development and I would highly recommend. I find the culture within the firm as a whole to be a lot less up tight than you may expect as an 18 year old first stepping foot into the corporate world. I have made great friends at EY among both my peers and the people within my team who are more senior, even up to Partner level.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EY?
  • Extremely. Within my team the appreciation for my work is communicated from all levels from managers to Partners. This kind of acknowledgement really gives a sense of accomplishment. I was also chosen as EY's nominee for School Leaver of the Year at the All About School Leavers awards 2017 at which I was a runner up. To be identified within a vast cohort of my peers as the nominee for this really showed me that despite the size of the firm your achievements do not go unnoticed, no matter what your level.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Professional Qualification: Fairly well structured, we are given time off to study and any time spent in college is paid - which is a plus! Generally the workload and exams can be balanced without too much strain. There is a big focus within the firm on the development of junior members of staff - so it is a great time to be joining EY.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My team are very conscious of avoiding overloading me with work particularly during periods of study. They are generally very good at managing my workload and allowing me to take additional time off if I feel I need it. This support is very helpful.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • At 21 and living at home the salary is more than enough to meet my living costs and save.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are a fair number of events throughout the year. Each year the EY foundation organise a 'mud run' to raise money for the charity. People from all across the firm get involved and it is great fun. Every Christmas there is a party for the whole of tax as well as individual parties within each team to celebrate the achievements of the year. In addition there are many social events, sports clubs etc.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • EY has been a great experience since I joined and I believe an excellent place to begin your career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Do plenty of research about the different areas within the firm to ensure you find the right fit. Try not to be too intimidated by the assessment day as this is just an opportunity for them to get to know you and decide if you are a good fit for EY, and for you to see if EY is a good fit for you!
