I am currently an analyst in the EY team. My daily task vary however the bulk of my work revolves around managing engagement metrics, emailing clients, producing documents and presentation and meeting stator deadlines. My daily interaction vary depending on my project but they mainly consist of setting tasks and updating on current progress of my work and reviewing/ discussing what is due from myself. My external interactions are predominantly with legal bodies such as HMRC however I have also been responsible with client interaction weather this be over the phone or through emails. I am current responsible for 22 individual cases ranging anywhere from small business to large Fortune 100 companies.
I am currently studying towards my charted accountancy qualification with the firm, this consists of a total of 15 exams 6 of which I have already completed and passed. I have also gained several internal qualification through training programmes that are regularly held, the majority of these courses are specialized towards my role however there is also more broad programs such as Spotfire courses. Working in the team you also learn a braud selection of professional skills and learn the fundamentals for professional services work.
I enjoy all aspects of my work and really feel like a valued member of the team having a braud responsibility. The company culture is relaxed and also enabling allowing great personal development. The program met my expectation however I was not ready for the pressure what is placed on candidates for the exams or the short turn around expected for individuals to pass along with the brutality what is inflicted once an exam is failed.
I fell recognised from all my peers and also from higher members in the organisation, there is a culture of grade not necessary mattering as long as you demonstrate the willingness and capability to be able to complete a task.
The program is well structured and clearly defined from day one enabling greater success and prior planning, there is substantial support for exams however the courses are now moving to more self study making the exams more challenging to pass and adding more work load to pass the exams. There is a good buddy system in the firm from when you first join to ensure you gain a broad understanding from day one and to ensure you have somebody to lean on when questions arise.
Our training program is completed by Kaplan, there is allot of support available from Kaplan however training has been limited with the organisation leaving the bulk of studying to be completed as self-study, this comes with both pros and cons but it is worth noting that support is still always available through this process an substantial time off is provided to enable studying. The team is also very understandable of study time and the commitment this takes with the majority of my colleagues completing the same program from all grades, this helps tremendously with work commitments.
EY provide moderate support for the exams on an organisation level, the bulk of my support actually comes from more of an individual basis through my team.
The salary is generous, however after accounting for high London living expenses it can often feel like it is not covering all bases and I feel like my ability to complete extra activity's/ socialize within and out of my team is limited.
With the job been based in London there is many out of work activity's to do, there is also a good community feel with my team and a large cohort of School Leavers, with this we usually all go out on a Friday to socialize, there is also a large array of events hosted by the organisation to attend.
Yes
It is a great opportunity with a great qualification to back it up, you learn allot and develop fundamental skills for later in life with the added bonus of a globally recognised organisation on your CV.
My main tips would be to invest considerable time in the initial process and ensure that you cover all bases, the recruitment process can be quite demanding/ daunting at times however it is built to be achievable. Another recommendation would also be to just focuses on exams, the vast majority of people who leave the firm is due to neglecting this fact, the job is very secure as long as you pass your exams.
