I am a technical underwriter with responsibility for technical referrals and also other projects. I deal with many internal and external stakeholders such as complaints team, claims, brokers as well as senior people within the company. I have other responsibilities such technical audits, writing policy wordings and managing scheme rules and eligibility
I am working towards my CII certificate in insurance which has taught me a lot about the history and legal aspects of insurance. My progress has helped increase my confidence in my abilities. I have also learned from the various modules about the wider skills needed for my job, and I have thought more about my areas of development and how I can meet them by internal training course.
I have really enjoyed getting back to learning and I have got into a routine about when and how I do my revision. I am motivated to develop myself and take pride in what I do. To begin with the course can see overwhelming with the amount of work required, but I have been able to break this down into sections and so I have set myself goals and checkpoints.
I know I am appreciated by RSA and I am sure that I will enhance this by going through the program. My leader and my senior manager have both commented on my progress and are both interested in how I am doing and how others in the team may be suited to the course. My fellow employees are keen to know what is involved and I am trying to persuade them to do the course as well.
The program started off a bit disorganised due to not having a permanent tutor in place for several months. The program was not clearly explained to me for several months and it was a little difficult to get started. It is only since I have a tutor that I have only recently become aware of how the apprenticeship would be assessed and what the timescales would be.
My tutor is always there when I need her, but to be honest I have not required much assistance as I have many of the skills already and I am motivated to do it. The feedback I have received on the modules have been excellent and it has been positive and very motivational. Having this support there if I need it has been useful.
My leader has utmost confidence in my capability in achieving this but also trust that I will do the work required. We have weekly one to ones where we discuss my progress and what else I need from them. They have been very flexible with me with regards to the balance in getting the work completed. I have been allowed study days and time to complete various parts.
I was an existing employee before I started the apprenticeship and so there has been no change as a result of me doing this.
I have been invited to company events where I can use some of the skills I have learned on the course (such as networking). I have also signed up for additional training courses which will help me with the areas of development identified from the course such as communication and strategy skills.

RSA is a very friendly and flexible employer. All staff are treated as individuals and they have excellent training and development plans for all levels of previous knowledge. You will learn a lot when at RSA and there are opportunities for talented people to advance, however this may not be a quick thing and so you will need to be patient.
I have been an existing employee for many years and so I cannot really comment on this.
