I am a vehicle trimmer in the trim development department, which is part of the desgin model shop. On a day to day basis I am never doing the same thing. I could be doing anything from carpeting a model to trimming a seat. This means i am constantly learning and taking on new challenges. I work directly with designers so there is a lot of responsibility involved in making sure they get exactly what they want in the models.
Before I came into this area I had basic skills in using hand tools but no experience in any interior trim development. I have been in plant for 9 months now and I am able to do a few tasks without supervision and a lot more tasks with a bit of guidance. I have learnt so many new skills and developed my existing skills.
I thoroughly enjoy the programme I am on. I work with a great bunch of people who really make you feel at ease and are very willing to help you with any problems. There is great atmosphere in the department and also in the whole company which makes work more enjoyable. The programme is above my expectations as I would never of thought I could of got the oppurtunities I have got in work and to enjoy your job makes going to work a very easy thing!
I have a great manager in work and on the apprenticeship who recognise your achievements and congratulate you when nessecary. Also I am very involved in the and valued within the daprtment which is a great feeling.
The programme is very well structured with regular meetings with your manager to discuss your problems, also the college side runs very smoothly and is very enjoyable.
There is as much support as you need on the apprenticeship from a wide range of people like your manager, collegues, training managers and even tutors at the college. If you have a problem it is usually resolved very quickly and you get alot of help if needed.
Again there is as much support as you need from your employer who help you with anyproblems or queries you have.
The salary is great! You usually go to a plant that is close to where you live so travel costs are never too much. I have no problems with the salary and even usually a bit of money left over at the end of the month!
There are many oppurtunities outside of work for you to go to other schools and colleges to speak to other students who are thinking about doing apprenticeships.
Yes
It is a great apprenticeship! Good fun, meet great people, earn very good money and gain a huge amount of experience in something that you enjoy!
The entry process is quite a long thorough process so dont give up on it and stick it out because i can promise that is it worth it!
