I am a tax technician in the Human Capital employment tax team. I will work for all members of my team, both helping with submissions to HMRC, advisory work and contacting clients. It is both hands on and engaging and you get trusted from an early stage.
I have both learnt and developed new skills. I am constantly working on excel and Microsoft and constantly building knowledge in these areas. We also regularly attend training sessions to help our technical knowledge in our specific field. On Top of this I am studying towards two professional qualifications and attend college in order to complete both of these.
I enjoy this programme very much as it gives a good balance of everyday work, whilst at the same time having to study and complete qualifications. My team are very engaging and care about your work/life/study balance. The culture in BDO is very collaborative and no matter what grade always encourage everyone to take an integral part in every project.
I feel very appreciated, whenever I do a project the manager in charge recognises the juniors contribution. I recognise this and am trusted with work and projects to make my stamp on. There is minimal external recognition but this is not important , as one is working on internal projects for internal managers who recognise the contribution. There are constant instant awards and mentions in the internal yammer or other groups.
The Programme is well organised , there is an internal team dedicated to making sure your studying runs smoothly. The actual studying in the main is outsourced to an external provider, who also have a dedicated person who you can ask questions to. This is coupled with the fact there are many people within the firm who have gone through the same path and are happy to help.
I receive support from my training provider. They are always happy to accommodate any question. There is an internal academy where you can post questions and a tutor will always answer if there are any issues. Additionally every time I go to college there is a tutor, they are always helpful and will always provide their email so we can contact them directly should we have any questions.
There are two forms of support internally, I have a counselling manager and there is an internal professional qualifications team dedicated to help our training. My counselling manager is always very understanding with my work /life/studying balance, if I ever have a question she is always happy to bring it up with the appropriate people or answer it herself. The professional qualifications team is very helpful, they have a have a high volume of questions being received every day but there answers are always very prompt.
My salary/package is a very competitive starting salary. It ranges if you are a school leaver/graduate and there is room to increase within your studying. But BDO pay for all college/material costs which is on top of your salary.
BDO encourages a very social lifestyle and great camaraderie at work. There are social teams within each team who are dedicated to making the socials as fun and open to everyone. Many times there are ad-hoc drinks with your teams or other forms of going out. On top of this there are other activities such as sport tournaments and other forms of entertainment. There is a form of entertainment for everyone.
Yes
It is a fun and informative experience and a great place to start work.
Be yourself and try to be as genuine on all the interviews. There is a minimal amount that can be prepared as BDO are really looking to see the person behind the mask.
