  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In my first year of my Manufacturing Apprenticeship at GSK I have been part of the Integrated Vials Module, Packing team. On a day to day basis we take batches to inspect, label and pack ready to be sent out to patients. I get the opportunity to train on different machines and hand inspection as well as working along side experienced, friendly and hard working staff.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my team work skills along with my confidence. I feel I can confidently communicate with anyone about my struggles, accomplishments and new ideas. I learnt how to use different machinery that is in no way similar to anything I have used before, and discovered more about the important medicine GSK manufacture.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by GSK?
  • I feel I am an important member of the team, my manager and colleagues treat me as part of the workforce and look after me very well. I have a good pay and am lucky to be involved in the benefits schemes GSK offer. I am regularly asked about my college work and studies in case I need help, or to congratulate me on passing any exams.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My first year has seemed slightly crazy as it was quite daunting joining such a large company. However, my line manager made a clear plan on what I should be trained on by the time I complete my first year. I am falling behind on this schedule due to the busyness of the department, moreover, I'm still not sure which department I move into next.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Gen2 College are my training provider, my tutor comes once every week for an entire day. We are falling behind due to a change of tutor which did disrupt our studies however we are being supported well to catch up. We can contact our tutor at any time and he is happy to provide any information we ask for.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • GSK provide very generous salaries and benefits including their share reward scheme and pension. This year, I feel I am competent in my department therefore, I do sometimes hope for more as my colleagues working alongside me get twice my pay. I am still very happy with my salary, and look forward to pay day every month!

  • GSK are a brilliant company to work for, since working here I feel extremely lucky to be surrounded by a large family workforce.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GSK?
  • Give it your best shot! When I first applied I wasn't entirely sure what a manufacturing apprenticeship would involve. Since starting I have thrown myself into the apprenticeship and learnt so much whilst enjoying myself. I have not looked back and hope to gain a permanent job in the future.
