My job title is an engineering mechanical technician apprentice; my day to day is doing 2D drawings.
I have learnt some new skill at collage but haven’t really had an opportunity apply them at work yet, I have learnt how to use AutoCAD at work.
I the beginning of my apprenticeship I really enjoy it and I look forward to coming to work and learning something new but of late I don’t feel like a progressing a learning as much as was before and that is slightly frustrating, but to my groups credit they have said I shall be doing more engineering work in the near future.
I feel valued at Arup there great company to work for everyone is nice and friendly
The program at Arup is very self-pushed I think you are kind of left to it when comes to collage and in work organizing meeting with mentors and things are very self-driven, there is no real structure with in work for me personally I just do the work that comes to me in a sense that’s it, for me personally I would prefer more regimental structure like having engineering talks on certain days and thing like that and software tutorials on things like Revit for instance so set in stone, but I understand this difficult in a working environment.
Support from our training provide from collage ranges from teacher to teacher some are more proactive then others, some teach replying to email request within 24 hours some to replying at all so it’s a mixed bag but the majority of teachers are very helpful.
When comes to learning I would say not as much as I would like the only real support inside of work is a health safety lesson we have to help with assignments due not having a health safety teacher at collage. There is support the only one I have in work is asking engineers and there all really helpful, but it be great have a like mini lesson at lunch on certain principles to we can take them and apply them to work as often I find myself just looking at a drawing and just drawing it and not really understanding why it’s there and what engineering takes place.
My salary is higher than most apprentices I know but as I travel from Oxfordshire to London every day I lose 33% of my salary before I have even start, but on the other I chose to work here but it would be nice if Arup rewarded the commitment of passing my probation and getting all the grades I need at collage to do so by helping me out to bring my travel cost of in line with others who live more locally toss up from living so far away.
There are plenty of opportunities outside of work, for instance me and some other appreciates did a low carbon challenge recently and built and eco café which was great fun.
Yes
I would recommend Arup to friend because its great place to work people knowledgeable and helpful and it a great company to have on CV
