I am a technical apprentice at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars LTD. I am currently at college full time and work at the plant during half terms or inset days for work experience. My Job title is: Parts Quality Apprentice Technician. My main role is to investigate problems with parts that are suspected to be supplier isues and to contact the supplier to resolve these issues. I also participate in daily meetings.
I have learnt numerous skills during my time so far as an apprentice, both at college and while working at the plant. I have learnt lots of machining and practical skills. I have also improved my knowledge and understanding mainly on engineering based subjects. I have also developed on my computing skills on programs like Excel and have learnt how to use new technologies. My social skills and confidence has also improved.
I enjoy learning new things and like being a part of such a huge company and feel proud to be involved with it. I get along well with the other apprentices and my team at work. I really enjoy college and feel like I have learnt a great deal already. I also enjoy helping my team at work and solving problems.
For such a big company, I feel like I am valued, even though I am still learning and can't contribute as much as I would like. The company has invested a lot of money in me and I am always asked for feedback and how I am doing. We have meetings with our managers, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] from HR, and our student tutor at the end of each term.
The College could have been more organized to begin with. The first couple of weeks were quite unorganized, but our course leader worked to sort us out. We now have a more structured program and are catching up to where we should be. But because it is a new course, there can be difficulties. The monthly reviews are helpful to address these problems too.
Most teachers are always happy to help and support me. Our course leader [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] is very friendly and always happy to help with any issue or query. The only isssue I have is one particular subject teacher preferes to take a more laissez-faire approuch to teaching where sometimes we could do with some more help when we are unsure. However, other teachers are happy to help us with queries from this class and [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] from HR has listened to our concerns.
The HR department are there if I have any problems and my colleagues are happy to help if I have any questions, even though they are very busy. Lee is in charge of training and organizing apprentices at the plant and can also be contacted if we need support with anything.
Coming from full time employment, the pay cut was something I had to get used to. Especially because of the travel costs/ money I need to spend on petrol. So I have had to change the way I spend my money and be more careful. However, for an apprenticeship, it isn't a bad salary.
Not at the moment as I am mostly at college. However, I have been invited to and attended work events, like leaving dos and the Christmas event.
Yes
Because it is a huge global company with a promising future and lots of opportunities and future prospects.
Keep on top of college work so it doesn't pile up. When at work or colege don't be afraid to ask for help when unsure.
