Associate - Audit Auditor - we check company accounts to see if the monetary value matches what they state on their financial statements. As a first year school leaver, I have been given responsibility over a few simple accounts, and have been eased into some of the more difficult accounts. This has been done quite well as the seniors on the team have always been happy to help, and do not treat you like you are stupid. This job involves a lot of client interaction, as well as interaction with other team members.
I have learnt how to efficiently use Microsoft Excel, time and resource management and how to confidently speak to the client
I enjoy this programme very much. The work is very stressful at times, especially in busy season where the hours are very long due to very tight reporting deadlines. However, the people in EY make things so much easier. Everyone is really friendly and helpful, the culture is fantastic, as everyone is willing to help each other out, and EY has big emphasis on helping out in communities - we have 2 'community service' days a year, where you can take a day off work to go help in an EY organised community event like a fun run.
Very valued - the teams are always happy to teach and coach people, as they want to make sure they are promoting good auditors into EY. Everyone on a team is always available for help.
It has a clear structure, and good support systems. However some of us feel that some of the timings of certain events are in very peculiar places, but they have been raised and noted down diligently, ready for the next cohort.
A lot - we get constant emails reminding us where we should be in terms of our milestones.
A lot - the employer will allow us to leave work on time if we have exams so we can revise.
Moderately well. If the job was 9-5, then the salary is absolutely fantastic for a first year school leaver still living at home, as the salary increases as you gain more seniority. However, sometimes the hours during busy season can become excessive, and we do not receive increased pay, but considering the base salary is quite high, this can be somewhat overlooked.
Yes - plenty of social events and sports clubs.
Yes
The school leaver scheme is a fantastic opportunity for those who wish to pursue a career in finance, but do not want to go to university. Some would argue that the school leavers scheme is better than the graduate scheme, as although you earn less than the graduates at the start, you have lots more experience than them, and you also don't have any fees to pay back.
Be confident, know what you're talking about. Be prepared for very long hours during busy season (which is generally January - April, but can happen at any point in the year.)
