Leather sewing apprentice Review

My job changes every 2 months, as we change our placements every 2 months. My main job role is to learn production work, this varies every 2 months dependant on the placement im in, usually covering leather, sewing and also learning how the production works. We also have to learn how to manage the team and how to do the process supporter role, which is assisting the team in any way you can, and basically running the team.

I have learnt lots of new skills whilst doing the apprenticship, mainly ones i ahdnt already had like working with leather and doing production work as this is very unique to what we do at work, working with leather covering and sewing is the main hands on skills i have learnt. Learning to run the team and work as part of a team is something i have done before but massivly improved since working here.

I do enjoy being at work and learning all different aspects of production and production management, and I also enjoy I also enjoy the challenge of the apprenticeship and thrive of the feeling of moving up and gaining knowledge. I don’t enjoy the college side of the apprenticeship as much as I feel this isn’t relevant to work and struggle to find motivation for this.

I feel valued being at Rolls Royce and feel like I get treated fairly and that people want the best for me and value my future. I feel most managers have given me a lot of experience and advice of how to progress within the company and how to progress myself.

My apprenticeship is well structured with a clear layout of what I’m doing in year 1 and 2. They do try and mix it up as much as they can and we get to spend a lot of time learning every aspect of the car production through the leather shop.

I receive a lot of support by my trainer as we work close day to day and is always near to speak to or ask any question. She is very knowledgeable and helps with a vary of things within the apprenticeship. And if she can’t help she will always be chasing someone or asking for results to be done on any query’s we have.

I receive a lot of support from work, they always try and help when possible and always have my best interest in sight. They listen to what I have to say and respond and act quickly to it. Mainly used online by email is the most common use of communication.

The pay package for an apprentice is very good compared to most apprenticeships about. However for me personally was a drop in what I was used to. I think if you come straight from school or education then its grate. If you come from a full time career it is a step down.

When there are opportunities outside of work apprentices are usually the first to know and get offered a lot of opportunities in and outside work. Managers are usually more than happy for apprentices to go and spend time on projects and events, as long as they get their day to day work complete.

I would recommend Rolls Royce to a friend as I feel it’s a great company to work for and gives you the best opportunities to further your career. There are many different roles to do within the company and get good opportunities to do this and progress. It is a friendly environment to work in and pays at a very good rate.

I would say to take your time choosing and looking into the apprenticeship you’ve applied for in detail so you know exactly what course and qualification you’re getting and what you’re doing at work, also be prepared for early starts and late shifts when finishing the apprenticeship. And practise before you do the online tests.
