  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an engineering apprentice working for BAE Systems; completing my first year at the training centre in Preston. I am currently working on the CAD (Computer Aided Design) section. On a day to day basis we have been learning how to use the CAD Software Auto CAD LT 2004. Following this preparation I have completed the three assessments on CAD which are designed to test you on the skills that you learn. We are responsible for maintaining our work spaces and working in a safe, controlled manner. Other sections that I have completed assessments on include: electrical, aircraft fitting and general fitting. You also participate in an aircraft section and machining.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have both learnt and developed new skills during my time on the apprenticeship. On the electrical section I developed skills that I had first attained at high school, learning in further depth where we also had the opportunity to carry out testing procedures and use a wider variety of different electrical components. On the fitting sections I learned how to rivet and work to a much finer detail where you are required to work to high tolerances on your jobs. In CAD I had never used the particular programme in place so I gained a wealth of new skills in learning to use the software competently.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • So far I have enjoyed every aspect of the apprenticeship, gaining a wealth of knowledge and new practical skills. The work itself is challenging and forces you to better your skills as you carry out new jobs. I had never undertaken an apprenticeship before starting at BAE last year so I didn't know exactly what to expect. I am thoroughly enjoying the apprenticeship and look forward to starting my placements later this year.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • I do feel valued by BAE Systems. We are kept up to date with the latest movement and goings on inside the organisation by monthly video reports. Further we receive probationary reviews every twelve weeks from Managers who show a lot of interest in our development and experience of the apprenticeship so far. The instructors encourage us to do our best and are always looking to help us to improve.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well organised. Initially every apprentice followed a 2 week induction to the programme. From there we have rotated from one section to the next, completing each unit of the course as required. The programme is focused to ensure that we all meet our targets and complete what is required of us.
