I am a mechanical engineer/ technician. As I work for a consulting company; PA Consulting. I work in a project team to tackle a problem posed by a Client. The range of work is massive as I work on a range of different projects for different industries at any one time. I use a range of machinery to create bespoke components, sub-assebmlies & assemblies: Conventional lathes & milling machines 3/4axis CNC milling machines CNC lathe EDM technology; wire & spark eroder Laser cutter I use Solidworks/ SolidCAM to design, alter & machine components.
I achieved a distinction at HND level in mechanical engineering. I have been on various Solidworks / SolidCAM courses. I have become proficient on all the machines from point 1. I have learnt how to think of out of the box solutions to novel problems.
Everyday is different, because every client is different in some manor. This means that the workload is always varying and therefore no one day is the same as another, this keeps things very interesting and I rarely get bored.
I feel like a valued member of the team. I'm always asked to help with further apprenticeship recruitment.
The educational side of the apprenticeship scheme is very well structured. However the work side was sometimes a little daunting if there wasn't any available guidance. This side of things is definitely improving.
College was always a chore, at Oakland's college & Bedford college it was hard to get work marked on time consistently and therefore getting backed up towards the end of each year; increasing stress levels.
There is very supporting apprenticeship team at PA consulting.
The pay has been consistently good throughout the apprenticeship scheme. As I lived at home the pay covered everything I needed. However if I needed to move for the apprenticeship I would struggle to have lived on the income, especially around Cambridgeshire.
There are some opportunities outside of work but not a great deal.
Yes
I really enjoyed it and the workload is interesting and diverse.
Just be yourself & be confident.
