  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role includes attending different bore holes and pumping stations in my area and completing Operational tasks such as site standards, dipping boreholes and filling out the log book. This also includes dealing with any site issues which might occur and reporting them. I also have the responsibly of completing college work aside this where I then have to regularly meet up with my assessor and get assessed on my site and work performance.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills such as Problem solving skills, when dealing with issues on site. Communication skills, during team meetings and meeting new people on a day to day basis. I have also gained a lot of confidence when working independently, such as attending meetings with people I have never met before.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the different opportunities that are offered to me. Each day is never the same and nothing ever feels repetitive. I enjoy meeting new people and spending time in different departments during placements. I enjoy attending college from time to time and seeing the other apprentices. I also like how you get faced with situations you may not usually get faced with, and begin to start pushing yourself and working outside the comfort zone.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It Is rather organised and structured regarding a college time table and regular emails being sent with important dates we must remember to put in our calender. However, there could be improvement in the structure regarding apprentices in their second year and keeping in contact with them. E.g- regular catch ups and sessions for everyone to get together again.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • In my first year I received a lot of support which was really needed at the time. I really appreciated the effort that was put in for me. I now don't require as much support in my second year due to feeling more settled in my current role and given more opportunity's, however my manager is continually really supportive when needed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I feel like I have a lot of support with my college work from my training provider at EEF. If I ever feel like I need help I could confidently get in contact with the college to receive the help and support I need. My liaison officer is always so supportive and approachable and we have regular reviews to discuss my performance and if I need any extra support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The outside company 'Merit Skills' which comes to teach at EEF has taught me a lot of role specific knowledge which I have been able to use in my operational role. Alongside this, at college I have gained Electrical, Mechanical and Programmable skills which could also be useful at work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are regular events which occur at Severn Trent such as charity sports event in which people can get together and get involved. Also the Apprentice Committee gives people the opportunity to get together and stay in contact, arranging events like site exchanges, where people from external water companies get the chance to visit one of our sites and visa versa.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Severn Trent to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Severn Trent to certain people who I know would enjoy this type of apprenticeship, as I don't think it would take everyone's fancy. However Severn Trent is full of new opportunities and I'm sure there would be a job for all kinds of people.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Severn Trent?
  • Ensure you know exactly what you are applying for before you do apply. Research into the job roles as sometimes they might not be what you expect. Stay positive during assessment day and keep smiling to show you're a happy worker. Show you are an open minded person and are willing to give anything a try!
