I carry out inspections on the sewerage network and check to see if all assets are functioning properly. This means that I go out on the vans as a team in order to cover the vast area in which Severn Trent operates over. There are a variety of different assets to check on the sewerage network including CSO’s and NRV’s.
I have attended an array of training courses that have been necessary to me furthering my role at Severn Trent. This includes a manual handling course which taught me how lift and move at work to limit strain on my body. I have also been on a working at height course which taught me how to be safe when working. I have also done some engineering units at college which has given me new skills with tools which I didn’t have previously
I am really enjoying the apprenticeship programme so far. I have made some new friends who I am in contact with regularly and also the balance between education and work has been good for me as I do not work as well in a classroom as I do on site.
I feel that the apprenticeship scheme could be better handled from a point of view of my tuition. I have limited contact with merit skills and only see them very briefly when I go to college. I would make the tutors more accessible and the work a little more digestible so that some one doesn’t need to translate the wording for you.
I have all sorts of support open to me from Severn Trent; this includes access to helplines and members of staff to talk to if I have personal issues. At work everyone is approachable and will answer any queries that you have to the best of their ability. I also found that there are training courses available that I can attend to give me further qualifications, such as first aid and HGV courses.
I find that contact is limited. I have been allocated an assessor and a tutor however I haven’t had any contact with my assessor at all and my tutor since being at college in November. I feel that the course needs to be delivered better as I don’t fully understand what needs to be done for my portfolio work.
The training course gives me background knowledge on the work that I will be doing on site which should allow me to understand the job better. If I understand what I am looking at better then I feel that I will be able to learn more quickly at my place of work.
I do receive a lot of emails regarding extra curricular work such as, volunteer days and training talks. I haven’t seen anything of leisure activities but going out and sorting my own activities with work colleagues is very possible. We have been out as a team for a Christmas meal.
Yes
Severn Trent has been a very good experience for me so far and I have been given ample opportunities in such a short space of time. I feel that it is one of the best companies that you could work for and they pay and excellent wage even at an apprenticeship level.
I would recommend that people were genuine and portrayed themselves in a good light during the selection process. Severn Trent try to hire people who will fit their ethos and it works really well. I also would recommend doing some research into the job in which you’re applying for.
