I move placements every 4 months where I am able to be part of various different teams and disciplines within the company both office based and practical work on board the ships. I perform a variety of tasks and work alongside various members of the team I am in and the various systems they are responsible for.
I learn new skills every day, learning how to use the various programs used by the company, learning how to read schematics and other drawings as well as how to produce these drawings. I also use problem solving skills on a daily basis and have to effectively work well with others at all times.
I enjoy my programme as it allows me to get a feel for lots of different areas within the company while learning. I am also looking forward to my final year to have increased responsibility and become a more valuable member of a team. Twilight classes at college day release are the only negative.
The programme was well organised to begin with though if there are any problems within a placement such as lack of work or not being assigned to the correct manager there is no dynamic changes made. Some placements do not want apprentices as they do not have the work load to accommodate them and this should be taken into consideration before putting apprentices there.
Support is there if I require it with the majority of things which is good. Management and training officers are generally approachable with problems, and colleagues around are generally happy to help with any day to day work issues you may have. There are some people that are uninterested in helping but it is easy to find others who will.
The company provide support, unsure if the company is deemed the training provider but if so then the company provide support through the training officers.
It allows you to think about each task you are performing in more detail and helps you to acknowledge what you do well and what you don't do so well in order to continually improve. Deadlines for logs allows us to keep working to a schedule which is a good habit to be in.
