I do different units at my training facility, so far I have done Bench, electrical maintenance and am currently doing fault finding. My role is to ensure these units are completed to a good standard; BTEC is every tuesday and maths, health and safety, and fault finding is studied. Assignments are received with deadlines for each of these units.
Ive learnt how to solder, identify circuit diagrams, work out different electrical laws such as Kirchoff's voltage law as well as understand circuit boards, different components such as capacitors, resistors, how they work and how to identify polarities. On bench, I learnt how to use different drills with health and safety in mins, how to use different files and ensure different types of surface finishes.
I enjoy it very much, bench was very difficult due to the repetition and having still not finished it, I didn't enjoy bench. I find fault finding very enjoyable however, a lot of new knowledge has been gained and I hope to progress in this area. The people at my company are very supportive
The programme is well structured; there are different people to go to if any issues arise and the training facility is well laid out in terms of how the programme is run. I like that a relationship has been established with the older years as some questions may be difficult to ask to managers, so the 2nd years are there for support as well.
My employer is very supportive, communication is good where I can contact them via email or phone. I have been assured that they are willing to give me any help I need if there is an issue at the training facility, for me, this is what a good employer is.
My tutors are always willing to help when asking questions, they are willing to take time out of the lesson to further explain a step in depth if one student hasn't understood something, this in turn creates better understanding for the rest of the class. They are very supportive.
My qualification has laid the foundation for all my knowledge and without it I wouldnt understand a lot of what I would have to deal with at work. The qualification goes into great detail, some of what is not required to know in the workplace but is good knowledge to have for the future.
On site at work, there are sports activities and groups which I can be involved with. There is also a face book group for social events which groups the apprentices from different years together, this gives the opportunity of meeting colleagues and potential work friends where you could learn a lot.
Yes
Everyone is very friendly at the company. It is a positive environment for a long term career. There are many different areas in which one can expand their skill set in; the opportunities available are good for someone looking for a career in engineering. There are many opportunities for extracurricular activities.
Ensure they have base knowledge of electrical components such as knowing what resistors, capacitors do. Doing research of the company will give you an idea of where you would like to end up at in BAE. Ensuring you have the correct personality, being polite, letting people speak such as during the group interview.
