Electrical technician Review

My role currently involves going to a training provider 5 days a week to learn about things such as electronics and cad. We do 1 day of btec every week where we do maths, electronic principles, health and safety and electronic fault finding. The other 4 days of the week we do our NVQ.

I have learnt new skills in bench. The skills I have learned are things such as how to sharpen a drill bit and correct filing techniques. I have also learnt how to solder and how to work things out such as the value of resistors in parallel/series in electronics

I enjoy my programme as it teaches me many skills such as CAD (computer aided design) and soldering. These skills are important as I will need to use my job in the future. Another reason I enjoy my programme is because I am learning skills and subjects that I find interesting.

My programme is structured well. For example for the first year we do 6 different subjects alongside our BTEC. The 6 subjects we do are bench, electronics, CAD, electronic fault finding, IPC and a project. We spend 6 weeks on each subject. This is plenty of to to ensure that we complete all of the assessments.

I receive a lot of support from my employer. We get a visit from the year 2 apprentices every 6 weeks and we also get a personal review every 12 weeks from our employer. We can also email them any time that we need extra assistance. For example, we needed information on an assignment for health and safety and our employer was happy to provide all the nessessary information we required.

We receive constant support from our training providers while learning about subjects. We receive less support when we are doing assessments as the assessments must be our own work but by the time that we are doing assessments we have already learnt all of the necessary information needed to complete the task.

I feels that all of the training that I am receiving will help me when I am back at BAE. For example I will need to know how to solder and how to use CAD to perform tasks. I will also need to know about things such as health and safety to ensure I stay safe at work.

One of the extra curricular activities at my place of work is the apprentice council. This is when 2 apprentices from each workplace around the UK meet and discuss any problems to do with the apprenticeship or any suggestions to improve it. Some apprentices also meet and do sports during lunch.

I would recommend the apprenticeship as the subjects are interesting and are taught correctly. You also receive a lot of support from your employer and your trainings provider to ensure that all assignments and assessments are complete on time. Another reason I would recommend this apprenticeship is because of the extra curricular activities such as the apprentice council.

When applying for BAE systems it is important to convey that you have an interest in not only the history of the company but also what they are currently doing. You also want to show that you have an interest in the subjects you will be learning about and show that you are the right person for the job.
