We work on a monthly cycle that normally spans 4 weeks with each week containing different tasks to complete. I use applications such as Microsoft Project, Excel and SAP on a daily to weekly basis. It also involves several interactions with customers, whether that be internal or external. we also run a lot of risk management and schedule maintenance
I have learnt several new skills on my apprenticeship which include: Increased confidence (being able to speak to new people, present information in meetings and pick up the phone to speak to someone). I have also increased my writing skills through writing more emails and important documents. I am also more confident in using IT software such as excel and understand what it can be used for.
Since I joined my apprenticeship scheme I have enjoyed it thoroughly, it has given me the opportunity to meet new and experienced people and learn for them. I have also been able to experience everything that comes under my job role for myself rather than learn the theoretical side before joining the role.
I feel that my programme is well structured and organised due to both the length of the programme and having the ability to move placements every year to learn new things, but also with the training provider who is confident in both the course they are teaching and degree apprenticeships themselves.
I feel like although we are not given constant watch by our employer, we as apprentices know that both our line manager and placement managers are there to help us when we need it. It gives a good balance of being supported without being constantly checked on. This gives us the opportunity to learn for ourselves and grow independence within the role.
My employer provides a skills coach to help us with any university based work. they also provide us with training to help along side our university course. The university offer both a mentor for assignments and essay support for any essay based issues. At university we also have a specific module dedicated towards our personal development.
I feel that going to university alongside working with in my role has helped me as it provides you with the theoretical view whilst learning from your own experiences in your placement. It also gives you the opportunity to network with people from other businesses and learn for their experience.
We have some extra-curricular activities that you can get involved with at my work. A large one that is highly promoted is helping and running STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) events at local schools and colleges and apprenticeship fairs. It is also highly encourage on our scheme to socialise and meet up as a group of apprentices, however there are not any planned social events or activities run.
Yes
I would recommend BAE systems as a company to others as it has a large group of employee perks that may not be easily found else where. They also have a very good health system to make sure that all employees are fit for work and in the best shape they can be. It is also a very good company for a life long job.
It is important when applying for any company to understand what the company does and feel confident that is the sort of company you should work for. You also need to show that you are willing to give 100% and learn from your role and adapt your mind set to fit any project you are given.
