My role as an engineering technician varies as I work around my placement plan. I have spent time in the design office where my day to day tasks involved either investigative work or actual modelling within the live model of the project.. I have also spent time in the Liaison team. The day to day tasks in this team varies due to the nature of the work it does. One day I can be annotating drawings to reflect supplier information and the next I can be on ship trying to find a specific piece of equipment.
I have been able to develop my confidence and problem solving skills throughout my time as an apprentice. Interacting with experienced engineers on a day to day basis has helped me to develop my confidence as I am able to complete the task given to me to the required level.
I am enjoying the programme very much. it has already given me some skills that I can use to further my career and my life outside of work.
The programme is very well structured. Right from my induction I knew what I would be doing over the course of the 4 years of my apprenticeship and what was expected of me at each stage. the organisation is good as well as I know who I should contact if I need any assistance with my course.
I receive a massive amount of help from my employer. I can get help from anything ranging from issues I may have in college through to problems I have within my placement and my training officer is available to email or phone whenever I require help.
I get a lot of support from my training provider when I am at college or doing in-house qualifications, such as my SVQ log book. An example of this is, in able to facilitate completing my SVQ on time, my employer/training provider has allocated 5 hours a week to use for completing log book entries or questions.
I feel that my qualifications I have gained/working towards helps me greatly within the workplace. It has given me a basic understanding of different engineering foundations that has enabled me to grasp what is being asked of me when I am being given tasks. It has also helped me to overcome certain problems I have encountered in my day to day role.
I have been invited to join an informal 5-a-side football game that is organised by one of the guys in the design office. As for formally organised events, the work currently has an apprentice council that is always looking for and organising social events. There is also opportunities for me to get involved in different STEM events through the work.
Yes
I would recommend it as they have a great programme that has provided me with the skills and qualifications to advance not just my career but my life as well. The pay is very competitive and the structured programme means you can see what you are working towards and you know from the off what the end goal is.
I would say just be yourself at the interview, don't try and put on a persona that isn't you as this will be seen through but at the same time don't lounge about or take it as a laugh. Try to be a bit professional and don't worry about your nerves, the interviewers are expecting you to be nervous and they will do their best to help you stay calm. Take your time when filling in the initial application form, don't do it in a rush or cram it into a 10 minute window, set time aside to do it. Reading up a bit on the company and what we do might also be beneficial.
