  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work with a team of civil engineers to complete schemes/projects in the waste infra side of the business. We use tools such as AutoCAD Civil 3D and Infoworks ICM to design and model proposed sections of pipe for new projects. I am currently working on a sewer rehab project in Birmingham.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • With using a computer most of the time my general computer skills have definitely improved. I also believe that my communication with my colleges in the work place has also improved. My time keeping and organisation has also improved as any work I'm given has to be completed by a set date usually.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • So far I have enjoyed my apprenticeship programme. During the two week induction period it was good fun meeting and starting the apprenticeship with other apprentices from all over the business. I've also enjoyed the challenge that have come with moving into a professional working environment and learning how I fit into my new team.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • So fair my programme has been fairly well structured. All the new apprentices starting in August were given a two week introduction to the company were we covered the basic training we would need. We than also had a college introduction too. I now attend college once a week for my HNC and have regular meeting about my NVQ.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive very good support from my employer. All my training, education and workplace needs are provided and paid for me by my employer such as my HNC at college. If I have any questions or need a person to talk to about an issues I my have then there are procedures in place that will allow me to do so.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I attended college once a week were in am doing a HNC, my tutors at college have experience in industry which is very helpful. For my NVQ I have regular meetings with an external person who also has previously worked in the water industry. I also meet up with my fellow apprentices which can allow us to share what we have done.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My HNC is in construction and the built environment which is helping me to build a general understanding about some of the process that we have to do at Severn Trent. The NVQ is specific to the water industry so I have to show evidence that I have done certain roles in my jobs which helps me to gain a wider understanding and performer my role better.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My team has regular activities after work a few times a month. We also have a Christmas party each year. There a also a professional networking event held a few times throughout the year called UDG were people from lots of water companies come together and listen to talks and 'network'.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Severn Trent to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The company has managed to create a really good working environment which is reflected by its workforce who seem happy at work and enjoy working. As a company Severn Trent also makes large effort to looks after its employees with monthly lifestyles choices such and being able to buy more holiday and discount gym memberships.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Severn Trent?
  • Show you interest and passion for civil engineering through extra curricular activities and clubs. Convey through you application that you are a good team worker and that you have a passion and enjoy what you do. And research about the company because it helps to show that you have some general knowledge about it.
