My role involves supporting the day to day management of the projects here at BAE. Ensuring that the projects are running to time, cost and quality and that scope is controlled. My role is varied depending on what placements we do, and we do three placements a year in order to get a good understanding of the business as a whole.
Yes Communication skills liaising with stakeholders and presenting Delegation-being able to manage my own projects Leadership-being able to lead a team to project success Negotiation- to discuss requirements and the best solution Teamwork- working as a team to achieve a common goal Initiative- taking the initiative to find solutions to improve processes
The two things I enjoy the most about my apprenticeship is the variety and the ability to 'make it your own' As we have 9 placement which, due to the size of BAE, are all very different. Each placement requires a different skillset and the ability to use different strengths and develop weaknesses. We also have the opportunity of a say in our development and to take on extra assignments which is always welcomed.
Very well organised I have 4 months placements, a 1:1 with my discipline manager every month, a 12 weekly review with Early Careers and a development review at the end of year. We have day release to college also each which to ensure we are learning about the skills we require for the role.
Lots- as mentioned previously- I have 4 months placements, a 1:1 with my discipline manager every month, a 12 weekly review with Early Careers and a development review at the end of year. We have day release to college also each which to ensure we are learning about the skills we require for the role. If there's ever a problem we have a network of people that we can consult to get further support- any issues I've had have always been resolved promptly.
In terms of college we go once a week. As we are studying for a Project Management degree college have always said that they are going to leave anything in terms of organisation down to use so we are able to learn the skill of managing our workload- so not very much however with good intention.
The project management degree enables me to perform better in my role. The project management degree gives me options to be able to use for managing projects and skills in order to lead, communicate, manage cost etc. Overall completing the qualification definitely allows me to perform better in my role.
Yes- I have done many 'stretch projects' which Early Careers are encouraged to complete. The stretch projects aid development in many areas including improving presenting skills, communication skills and leadership skills. Stretch projects allow higher apprentices to practice the running of a project before working on the complex projects that occur in BAE.
Yes
The scheme is good on many levels. They develop you by funding you through professional qualification including a full degree. They also allow you to complete challenging tasks in work to allow you to progress and develop. You get a full network of support which is really beneficial as a young professional in the business.
The advice I would give is to research BAE systems before you go to apply. In your interview phase make sure you use real life examples to back up any skills you say you possess. Also research the field you are going into in order show you have made an informed decision when applying.
