On a day to day basis my job involves maintaining military aircraft to ensure they are airworthy, this includes, carrying out routing servicing, fault finding, and functional testing, we work to the correct procedures written down in the aircraft manuals and fill out all the required paperwork to sign for the work done.
Before starting the apprenticeship i had basic maintenance knowledge from working on cars, but no experience of what was involved with working on aircraft, during the first year of the apprenticeship we learnt all the knowledge of how aircraft work, and everything that goes into maintaining them, then in my second year we go hands on, on live aircraft learning how to properly maintain them
I fully enjoyed my apprenticeship, it allowed me to start a career i had been interested in since childhood, every part of the course was interesting and was relevant to the job i am now doing, the theory side of the course can drag a bit but its required to have the understanding when it comes to the practical side
The organisation of the course was the only bad side, before starting, the application process took along time, sometimes going months before i knew if i was successful or not and only receiving a proper contract a week or so before my start date, throughout the course the layout of the course was changed.
The instructors during first year provided excellent support, they were always on hand if we had any questions regarding what we were learning, during second year the support was a bit harder, as the NVQ assessors weren't always based on side it was sometimes difficult to get a hold of them, but eventually everything was sorted.
During the first year we received enough support to get us through the exams, as said previously, not always having assessors on site results in times when it was difficult to get questions answered on things we were unsure on, but regular visits to the bases were arranged and the support we received during these sessions were very helpful.
All the training i received during the two year apprenticeship has definitely help me carry out my role professionally, every aspect of my day job was covered in the two year course and there were no surprises when it came to doing the job we knew what to expect, the training i received helps me carry out my role to a professional standard
During the first year there are a variety of social activities and charity events to get involved with, and the same in second year, the base I'm at regularly has all sorts of social events, sporting events and charity events taking place that you are regularly invited to get involved in.
Yes
It's a great opportunity if you want to get into aviation industry working with a great company that you can achieve a lot in. The apprenticeship has set me up with an excellent career that i would be happy to be part of for the rest of my working in a company that i can achieve alot.
Take you time to ensure that your application is all correct, go to the interview fully prepared and professional show you have an interest in engineering, and be confident, if you are successful with your application don't waste the opportunity, if you don't take it seriously then they will get rid of you.
