  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I will be assigned to work on a project and will have a placement manager who will assign me tasks to do relating to it. the nature of these tasks changes depending on what the placement is. it could be purely administrative, research or actual modeling work to do with it.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of new skills including some basic coding, a good idea of how to program different simulators and how to use CAD and CFD. As well as how to find and solve problems with the code of a program. I have also learnt how to take notes and minutes.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the day to day work of the job as it is varied and really interesting. however the training provider is [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] to the point the whole college feels like a fraud. so the work is good but the program itself is [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] and lacking any leadership or anyone to take ownership.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Pretty pitiful, no one understands it and it appears it doesn't deliver us with a high enough qualification to get a permanent job at the end. the sponsor has just changed which is certainly a good thing as the previous one wouldn't lift a finger to do anything.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • minimal at best, no one's really willing to get involved with it or has the ability to really help. on the placements themselves its good as the placement managers themselves have been good at supporting my learning and development. but the scheme broadly and the college are truly dreadful.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Almost nothing at all, the absolute shambles that is PROCAT college haven't got a clue what is going on. we eventually got a mentor from them but he has come to our office once and frankly didn't know what he was talking about. they honestly haven't a clue.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I don't think it has helped me so far in the slightest to do my job. frankly the stuff we do in college is patronizing and irrelevant. learning how to take apart and reassemble and engine can't really be related back to performance modeling on the railway surprisingly.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • None that have been actively offered to me, there are ones outside of the business I could get involved in. however internally it consists of going down the pub after work. or the Christmas party. I do not mind this but perhaps other stuff on top wouldn't go a miss.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company itself is really interesting to work for and is so varied there's loads of different areas you could go into. the travel perks are good and there's a good pension as well as its nice to work for a big well known company with lots of history.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
  • make sure you check and really ask questions about the scheme and what it leads onto and not trust that a big company would be organized as I did. however I would recommend they consider it as an employer so long as the role is one that actually values the work of the employee.
