Maintenance Technician Review

To learn how to do tasks on the railway by shadowing and working with qualified engineers and maintainers. Some tasks I am not allowed to do but I get involved wherever I can. along with this I have work to complete for college and spend some days at college leaning theory

I have learnt many new skills. I have a retail background so this apprenticeship has been really great for me in regards to learning new skills. I have also had the opportunity to use my existing skills which include team working and communication whilst working within the teams I have been on placements with

I enjoy my programme very much, I am always given the opportunity to learn new things and I am guided by TfL managers to help me to get the exposure that I need for my qualification. But I am also in charge of my learning and it's up to me to ensure I get the evidence I need whilst I have the opportunity

My programme is very unorganised, I am a Crossrail/Elizabeth Line apprentice and as the Elizabeth Line itself is behind it has impacted my schedule and I haven't been able to get as much experience as planned at the beginning. That being said My Managers have done what they can to get us apprentices on placements in other areas of TfL to ensure we can get some experience for our NVQ qualifications. My college isn't a great learning provider and we never know when we are supposed to be at college or not and the teachers keep leaving or getting sacked

I get a lot of support from my employer, I have regular catch ups with my manager to see how I am doing and I am able to ask for support whenever I need it. I also have a Mentor to help and guide me through this experience, I can also go to my mentor if I have problems that I do not wish to talk to my manager about.

No support is provided by my training provider, the college is severely behind and do not have enough teachers of assessor's to help or provide any support. I have had to work with other apprentices in order to work out what is needed and do my best to ensure I have everything

most of the training I feel was useless. We had one workshop teaching us how to use basic tools, drilling, filing etc. which I found very helpful and it did help me perform better while out on job. Everything else is questionable and I'm not sure of its relevence

Yes. there are lots of different things and groups to get involved in at TfL. There are sports teams, Away Days, Mindfulness sessions and various other networking events. I have met employees from all parts of the business who I never would have met in my day to day activities

Because I believe it is a great company to work for, you are well looked after and my home work balance has greatly improved since moving to this company. there are also lots of benefits like discounted season tickets for rail travel and various other discounts in retail stores that are an added extra to working here

Relax and be truthful in your application and interview. I didn't know anything about engineering when I joined Transport for London, but I still got my apprenticeship based on my attitude and willingness to learn. The company value's are much more important, as you will learn most of what you need to on the job
