My job role is a Project Management apprentice at Transport for London, where I get to look at costs on each project, compared with quality and timescales and work out the best way to support my client. Working in an office environment helps me to improve my confidence and enhance my learning with a range of people
I have learnt more about developing my presentational skills, how to chair meetings, how to hold a conference call and how to get my point across better. I have grown a lot in confidence and I really am having a fantastic time in my own self development and I can see how much I have grown
I think my programme is really interesting, I work with a lot of different people with various personalities and it has given me an opportunity to learn at the same time as working. I enjoy going to work everyday because I always learn something new and can always improve on myself
We study for 20% of our time per week, which usually works out at about 1 day a week where I can work on my portfolio and then the other 4 days I get to work on projects and lead them. I think its structured very well but then again you will get more benefits if you show a strong interest
I receive a lot of support, whether it be HR or from careers teams inviting me to events, everyone is always willing to help an apprentice. My manager is really keen to get me involved and give me responsibility too which means that I always have something to do which is really good for self learning
we have a lot of online training which gives us an overview of what the qualification will involve but then also the QA managers will be really supportive of any additional learning needs that the student may have. During the training work shops they are really informative too and give us a lot of information
APMP is essentially a qualification that most Project Managers use in their day to day job, and constantly make reference too. Learning this qualification helps me to synchronise this to my everyday learning as I work with other PMs. For example, Governance is really important to TFL but if I had not been to a governance course I would probably not be able to perform as well when using the same tools here.
Yes, the Early Careers teams are great, they always invite current apprentices to get involved with promoting it, which also provides us with a networking activity. We also have a Graduate and Apprentice forum which has networking events and is a really fun way to meet other people in the same shoes as you. TFL were really supportive of a Chanukah event I hosted too in my office and I had over 140 visitors!
Yes
I think it is a great advantage doing an apprenticeship, you get the full work experience package with learning at the same time. I think its great because people think that TFL is just trains but there is so much more to learn, it is fascinating that there are so many aspects that you can get involved with.
I think everyone should go to the careers events beforehand and really delve into the options that TFL provide. There is such a strong range, from finance to engineering, there really is something for everyone and if you work really hard you will reap the benefits and see the growth and change you can have on others. An opportunity not to miss!
