Intelligent Transport Systems Apprentice Review

For this course you have multiple placements in teams within the engineering department. However the main focus is the highways and traffic team, which is where you receive different jobs, from either within the company or from the boroughs. These jobs can be anything from designing a new pedestrian crossing to a massive junction.

I have learnt how to use computer aided design to the level required for the job. I have also vastly improved my use of Microsoft office. I have improved my people skills, I have vastly improved my problem solving skills, I have gained the ability to read and understand technical drawings and diagrams. I have also improved my organisational skills.

I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship, as the work is interesting, the people are all extremely nice and welcoming. I also enjoy constantly learning new things. I enjoy that the work isn't 100% desk based as you need to go out on site to survey the are when designing something new.

To be perfectly honest for my joining year the programme was incredibly unorganised as the company was currently undergoing a transformation, so it took us a number of months to receive any real work / placements, however in saying that they have improved significantly with the apprentices that started in 2018, as they received work / placements almost instantly.

They support me in whatever way they can, the are always people willing to help if you don't understand something. If you feel overwhelmed with office work and coursework they will help you find a comfortable balance between. They are very understanding of any personal issues that may arise.

They support you through the course with any queries you may have with the lesson or the coursework. They do their best to put us in a position to achieve the highest possible grade. They also have a safeguarding team so if there is anything that you are that is troubling you there is a safe space to talk about it.

I feel that there are certain units that helps in my role a lot better than others, for example we studied an electrical unit which we most likely will not require, but I believe it was compulsory to the course, the more useful units are the design related ones as I would require that knowledge in my day-to-day.

There is a group that does football once a week, there are various charity events. Once a year a group comes in that provides health check ups, such as BMI tests, blood pressure tests. They also give advice on how you can improve your lifestyle. There are also the occasional team event.

I would recommend TFL to a friend because it is a great opportunity, with good prospects, and you will see the way London works in a completely new way. Also having Transport for London on your CV is a great way to open up many potential opportunities in the future.

I would tell them not to stress about whether they get might get rejected or accepted, because there are plenty of opportunities out there for people who want to achieve. I would also tell them to just give it their best and really try because it is a good opportunity to get.
