Software Developer Review

As a software developer, I support projects and brands from a technical perspective - with the main purpose of my role being to help brands 'get online' and establish a successful ecommerce site. On a day-to-day basis, I am working on planning and developing projects - supporting them from a technical perspective.

I have learnt about the architecture side of I.T and why doing architecture reviews is vital in determining the viability of a technical project. From the development side, I have advanced my skills in HTML, CSS and JavaScript - my line manager has fully supported my study days and allowed me to take the time to self-study, for my own personal development and my exam.

I enjoy the work I am doing as I getting to apply my passion for development in a real-world environment - the projects I work in have a real world impact and add value to the business. The study side of my apprenticeship has been more challenging due to the nature of self-study, however I have improved and learnt new things from having this time.

My programme structure is adequately organised. I have 2 exams and no coursework - this means a large amount of my time is spent 'learning-on-the-job'. For me personally, this is a great thing however others who are used to a structured approach may disagree. I talk with my line managers to determine the best projects/areas of work for me to get involved in - areas that will be valuable both for me and the business.

My line managers give me continued support both from a technical and personal perspective. Also, they make sure that I am getting the time for my study days - which is an important part of the apprenticeship.

I have received good support from my training provider. They have provided me with all the resources I need to revise for my exam, as well as practice papers to allow me to gauge my competency. I need to get 80% on 2 practice papers in order to sit the exam - this allows me to enter the exam at a good standard.

My qualifications in HTML and Software Development methodologies do help me perform better in my role, both technically and personally. The HTML5 qualification strengthens my technical skills as a software developer and the Software Development methodologies allows me to work more efficiently and communicate better within a software development team.

There are lots of extra-curricular activities to get involved in at Unilever. There is a football team at the Leatherhead office and the apprentices regularly gather for work drinks/social outings in the evening. There are also opportunities to engage with members of the public through open evenings, which I have found great for personal development.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working at Unilever, from contracting through to my current role as an apprentice. The work I do makes a real-world impact and the people in the organisation are supportive of me at a professional and personal level. The company has a people-focused approach to business which makes work better and more enjoyable.
