In my current role as a project controller I'm responsible for monitoring and controlling the spends and deliverables of a number of different projects relating to the future of computing and aerospace. This role means I have to interact with various stakeholders within the business throughout the country. On a day to day basis I review progress and consult the task leads to make sure they have everything they need to get the job done.
Throughout the course I’ve developed my computer skills especially in excel and through the constant interaction with people I’ve learnt how to tailor my messages to receive the information that I need to do my job.
The programme is enjoyable, I especially enjoy the different placements seeing the aircraft take shape and working with enthusiastic people to overcome challenges as a team. I particularly enjoy watching the aircraft being wheeled out the hanger and knowing I’ve been a part of creating the future.
The teams in which I’ve work in have greatly valued the contributions I have made, including me as part of the team and wanting my inputs to a number of decisions. The project control foundation scheme at BAE Systems is held in very high regard and whoever I talk to wants to know what I’m currently working on.
The scheme is very well organised with the different placements around the company happening smoothly with the competencies that need to be undertaken being taken into account. However I do feel apprentices could be kept up to date with the process rather than being told at the last opportunity.
The college is supportive, adapting the teaching style if required. The work based competency assessments length and time are tailored to your individual needs while it can be easily changed if required due to a change of circumstances.
BAE supports you in whatever you’re required to do for your apprenticeship. It supports you in your day to day job and actively encourages you to partake in extra activities to help with the competencies. If you have any problems the management are very happy to listen and can adapt things to meet your circumstances.
The salary is very competitive allowing me to comfortably run my house with opportunities for pay increases throughout the course.
The apprentices in BAE are actively encourages to undertake extra activities outside of work including helping the local community through charitable work and the apprentice challenge where teams of apprentice’s develop innovative products. Throughout the area BAE Systems gets discounts at gyms and clubs while we have opportunities to represent BAE at international events like the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford.
Yes
Due to the competitive salary, the opportunities for progression and the great support network available that comes from working for a multinational company. It has opportunities worldwide to enable you to travel as well as a great training system that will take you as far as you want to.
Learn what BAE Systems does, its products and what technologies it’s developing. When candidates apply for the apprenticeships they don't generally have the experience however what stands out is people’s enthusiasm to learn.
