Advanced Engineering Apprentice Review

My current role is within the Hawk Airworthiness department at Brough. As part of my role I am required to assist the team with Fault investigations with the aircraft as well as providing different documentations for the product. This includes Certificates for Flight with are required for the aircraft to have correct clearance and requirements to be flown.

I have learnt many different skills while I have been on my advanced apprenticeship. This is including, but not limited to, IT skills such as Excel, Adobe, and CAD, as well as document creation and analysis. I have also developed existing skills during my apprenticeship such as communication and team-working skills as they are used on a daily basis.

I really enjoy my apprenticeship programme. I have been given the opportunity to learn on the job technical engineering knowledge while working with aircraft. I am able to gain the relevant work experience to progress my career within engineering allowing me to branch out into other sectors later into my career. I also have to ability to move on to do a degree in the future after I have achieved my HNC and HND, though I already have A Levels.

The apprenticeship with well organised with a definitively clear apprentice structure. Our training assessor is excellent and effectively helps guide us through the process. We have regular Objective meeting and apprentice reviews to ensure that we are kept on track with our progresses as well as ensuring we know what we are expected to do for our placements.

The support we receive from our training assessor is excellent. He is always on hand to lend support with any NVQ queries we may have as well as being available to assist with personal support needed. We also receive good support from our placement supervisors who assist us with our daily work.

We receive a lot of support from our training provider regarding our NVQ work. On a regular basis, our training assessor meets us to discuss current progress with our apprenticeship work to ensure when we are on track. When we complete work which can be used towards our qualifications, our assessor helps us achieve as much as possible.

The qualification which I am currently striving for is a Level 3 NVQ Extended National Diploma in Engineering Technical Support. This qualification ensures that I understand the work being produced within the company as well as allowing me to gain the knowledge and skills required to carry out my job role effectively.

As part of my apprenticeship, I am a STEM ambassador for the company. This means that I am able to help promote the apprenticeship and engineering to students and young people at schools and different events. This helps provide a community service to the surrounding areas and help inspire different people to look into STEM apprenticeship and subjects as a career.

I believe that my apprenticeship is very well funded and supported. It provides qualifications and knowledge which help open a variety of different doors for future jobs within the engineering sector. As well as this, you are able to gain lots of experience within engineering through the use of on the job training.

My advice would be to take an interest in STEM subjects at school, college and your spare time to get an appreciation of the type of work that the company produces. As well as this try and make your application stand out from the rest through the use of extra curriculum activities such as a sport, cadets or volunteering experience.
