  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Acting as an assistant project manager working with a team, managing my own work load as well as helping to support other teams. Regularly working with the client to ensure programmes are running smoothly. I work at my clients location a couple days of the week and within this we often hold workshops. I create and maintain project schedules as well as liaising with different stakeholders and project teams.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a variety of new skills - both hard and soft skills, through training and work experience. I've learnt to use a number of new softwares as well as developing my existing IT skills. I have gained industry accredited qualifications within my time including APM PMQ , APM PPC and Agile. My internal training is split into theory and soft skills and they are well balanced as they are equally as important as each other. I have found that if there is anything I come across that I want to learn then I am able to enroll on an internal training course or be pointed in the direction of someone willing to teach me.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Really like it due to the rotational aspect of my programme. I think it has accelerated my progress as I have managed to work in varying roles in a range of sectors. I have worked in good and varied teams. The programme has exceeded my expectations in the sense that I have been given the trust and responsibility above what I thought I would get. Receiving the same level of time and respect as someone of a higher grade within the company. I enjoy my role and know that if there came a time where I felt I needed to be challenged more then I would be able to actively do this.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is well structured and facilitates progression at a good rate. Our internal training is delivered to a high standard by a range of people from within the company as well as external professionals such as our recent legal training. We have multiple points of contact: HR, line manager, mentor and our teams. We have regular meetings to discuss our progress, our progression and our work so we always have targets to aspire to and I haven't lost on interest at any point because I am consistently developing my knowledge.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Line Management - Receive a good level of support and this is often on a day-to-day basis and is often goes above and beyond what is required HR Team - The emerging talent always make time for us regardless of what the query or issue may be. They are efficient at speaking to the right people as well as encouraging us to push further. Mentor - I have a director as my mentor which demonstrates the company culture. No one is too senior to make time or give you guidance and I think it's particularly useful to have someone a lot further ahead of you in your career as you both learn from it. My business unit director makes the time to get know everyone on an individual basis and I would feel comfortable coming to her regardless of the topic.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I would not recommend my training provider. I do believe they have improved over my time on the course but initially they were very poor. However, they have improved with the feedback that our employer has provided and acted on. Once we were allocated a consistent teacher, the level of teaching was good.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My course is very relevant to my day-to-day work and therefore has had a positive impact on my day to day role. Have gained a better understanding of the theory involved as well as what best practice looks like. I've applied each of the different aspects into my routine. However, I would've found it more interesting if it had been less generic but I understand they have to cater to different industries.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are lots of regular networking events ranging from 'Breakfast with the Board' to quarterly comms sessions. There are often social events organised and there is lots of inclusion within teams and departments/sectors. We are strongly encouraged to spend a day volunteering and I have found this to be very rewarding and taken up new experiences because of this. There are a variety of different groups such as ex-civils and LGBT We have apprentice & graduate team buildings and socials Well-being challenges such as 100 miles in 100 days

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The culture at Mace is a positive on with there being a strong sense of ambition and many are hard working. People are encouraged to progress and are supported with a wide range of opportunities that not many other companies offer. Due to the supportive nature, they are very accepting of what you want to do in your career. For example, if you decide you would like to work in a different sector or business unit then the right people will support this.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
  • Be honest in terms of what it is you're looking to achieve. Show ambition and enthusiasm. If you're going in as Apprentice or graduate then you should aim to get onto their work experience programme (week long) or register your interest that way as you will then be known by the people who do the recruitment process. On the assessment day you should aim to be as collaborative as you can whilst demonstrating some independence. Think about the qualities of the role you are applying for.
